RENEWED SPIRITUAL COMMITMENT BRINGS HEALING

In my study of Christian Science I've learned that physical challenges often are linked to misconceptions in thought, and that to see progress I need to uncover the mistake and replace it with the truth of my spiritual nature. Such healing may take time, or it may come quickly. But either way, I've found the process of understanding one's way out of such errors is always rewarding, and that it is especially gratifying when the trouble yields to spiritual growth without a struggle.

In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy wrote of instances in which error simply vanishes. For example: "Mortal error will vanish in a moral chemicalization. This mental fermentation has begun, and will continue until all errors of belief yield to understanding" (p. 96). Mrs. Eddy also wrote of disease vanishing "into its native nothingness like dew before the morning sunshine" (p. 365). When something vanishes, there's no great fanfare about it. It was there (or, more accurately, it appeared to be there), and then it was not. It may even take a while to notice its absence! If I look around a room, I'm far more likely to notice what is there, than what is not.

In my own life, one mental error that simply vanished unnoticed was the mistaken belief that I would always be greatly hampered in my demonstration of Christian Science because I came to it later in life and with a lot of medical knowledge. I was often greatly tempted to use material remedies for various physical ailments. But with increased study and understanding, the perception that I was disadvantaged simply wafted away. I have had an ever-diminishing desire to use material remedies, and haven't used medicine since joining The Mother Church about nine years ago.

I experienced a physical healing that came about in an equally natural way. In 1988, before I began to seriously study Christian Science (I'd been introduced to it as a teen), I was diagnosed with "nonspecific connective tissue disease" by both my local doctor and by the Mayo Clinic. This condition gave me more or less discomfort at different times, but the symptoms were always with me. Because the doctors were not able to pin down the type of this disease, they couldn't say whether it would develop into a more serious condition, or stay at a manageable level. About eight years after receiving the diagnosis, I rededicated myself to studying Christian Science, and very soon afterward the symptoms of the tissue disease just vanished.

Sometimes I've experienced healing when a particular concept in Science and Health has resonated within me. Other times, I've clearly felt the presence of God and can more or less pin down the timing of the healing. This case was different. I did not pray specifically about it, or seek the help of a Christian Science practitioner. As best I can describe it, the painful condition melted away as I simply tried to gain a more spiritual outlook on life. My healing has been complete and permanent.

A little leavening truth truly does leaven the whole lot, leaving all of one's thoughts and life-experience purified.
