A proven track record of healing—and cure
Take a stroll over to any major bookstore these days, and you'll find the spirituality section jammed with periodicals focusing on spirituality and health. How can someone discern between passing fads and what really has substance and staying power? In other words, how can you know if a program, system, or strategy for complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) really works as an alternative to allopathic medicine?
We think it's vital not only to study the foundation and reasoning of a healthcare system, but also to look at its track record. Is there any proof that cure takes place? Have results of this system been verified? Last year the great-great-great-grandson of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discover and Founder of Christian Science, visited The Mother Church and The Mary Baker Eddy Library for the Betterment of Humanity in Boston. Until this visit, he and his wife knew almost nothing about the Biblically based healing system she discovered in 1866 and named Christian Science.
One can imagine the impact on them as they came to realize how many healings have been brought about by the discovery explained in his great-great-great-grandmother's book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. We agree that the testimonal record of Christian Science healing is not only impressive and convincing, but it also continues to grow every day, globally. To date, the record of verified Christian Science healings includes testimonies from people across the world, from places as diverse and far-flung as Moscow to Bombay to Beijing to Sydney to Jakarta to Amsterdam to Tokyo to Nashville to Halifax to Kinshasa—and a multitude of places in between.
These healings are distinct because, while they include the dramatic cure of physical illnesses—even in many cases considered hopeless and incurable—they are coupled with the life-altering element of spiritual regeneration. They tell the story of hearts cured not only of debilitating disease, but of attitudes spiritually softened, opened, and made more forgiving. In many instances, the physical cure of all kinds of diseases came as a result of Christian Science treatment through prayer that inspired a change in character—the regeneration of moral standards and lives redeemed. For so many people, their physical healing was almost secondary to the spiritual growth.
In the vernacular of the healthcare world, healing indicates that through prayer, therapy, counseling, or other means, patients find peace and a measure of forgiveness, whether or not their physical condition is cured. And we agree that in Christian Science treatment, the word healing, as used in this context, is definitely a part of what takes place. But the complete healing also includes cure. Christian Science is a healing approach that does not accept the prognosis of incurability as inevitable.
As the healings that Jesus performed show, every individual is the likeness of God—who is Spirit. And since in Spirit there can be no evil condition at all, it follows that there also cannot be any incurable condition. Have Christian Scientists proven this in every single case? We cannot claim that. But has Christian Science proven this fact in tens of thousands of cases over the years? Yes. Many healings have been acknowledged by physicians who have been in inspired when witnessing the results of Christian Science treatment. For example, in this issue, you can read Trinks Wasik's account of her healing of a condition diagnosed as "incurable"—and of her physician's statement at the birth of her son, "It was a miracle."
We think the track record—and the foundation and reasoning of Christian Science healing—Will stand up to the scrutiny of any sincere person trying to discern if a spiritual healthcare system has substance and staying power. We're now at 125 years . . . and counting.
