Values the old and the new

Thank you for the article on the Brick Project in the January 6 Sentinel ["Building world unity"]. Since 1950 I have been involved via letters with people in other countries. To see this international education program so beautifully presented in a magazine I cherish made my heart sing.

"Sacred music hits a high note" in that same issue was another winner for me, since my grandson is now writing and performing hip-hop/rap with the focus on providing a positive alternative to the negative messages so prevalent today. I'm sending this article on to him to show he's not alone in his endeavor.

One last note. Longtime students of Christian Science still need "feeding," too. Some recent issues have a disproportionate amount of material without direct reference to the teaching and revelation of Mary Baker Eddy. All in all, I am grateful for the higher and broader view being offered in the Sentinels now, but let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater!

'The same inside'

The January 27 Sentinel ["Finding home in the presence of God"] was super, but three articles in particular spoke to me.I appreciated Judy Olson's willingness to share feelings after working so hard for a healing of a respiratory condition in her article, "Prayer that heals —simple, but profound."

Sarah Nelson's phone call for help ["Who will take care of me?"] reminded me that we need to listen to that still, small voice inside, so we can ask for what we need. Listening also lets us know when we need to be the answer to someone else's prayer. I recalled two instances when God gave me the idea to help women who lived alone in situations not too unlike Sarah's: taking soup, Saltines, and soda to an ailing Methodist choir director I sang with, and later to the Christian Scientist organist I worked with.

Third, Ari Denison's photo and story of the worker high above New York City ["The courage to really see"] in a storm at night made me think of a metaphor. In the storm of an argument with my partner; I can opt for courage to see his beauty. By setting aside fear of not getting my way, my strength is creased and our relationship is elevated. Thanks, Ari.

As I looked back at this issue, I was impressed with the diversity of contributors —an African American, a Mexican, an Iranian-born woman—humans all, people who happen to look different externally and live in different places, but who really are the same inside. No wonder the Sentinel appeals to us all.

Timely articles

I have just finished the January 27 issue ["Finding home in the presence of God"] and just want want to thank you for the continued timeliness of articles. I was particularly touched Warren Bolon's article "A out darkness light," about the turnaround Kenny Simmons. article shows how important the outreach of Christian Science Reading Rooms is. I find the current Sentinelsvery uplifting and inspiring.

Hard feelings overcome

Thank you all so much for the February3Sentinel ["Forgiveness from the heart"]. I needed each and every article so much to overcome my hard feelings. Thank you for coverinrg in so many constructive ways this challenge to forgive. The Sentinels are always such a treat.

As a South African I have never been racialistic, but when I was in a wheelchair after suffering a stroke, the local black people showed me they cared. A sergeant at the local police station took hold of my arm and said, "We are going to get this to work." I absolutely love each and everyone. It is a treat to live in Natal.
