Picking up where my granddaughter...

Picking up where my granddaughter left off, I can explain that a rainforest adventure I had a few years ago required some strenuous hiking on steep and slippery trails. While I was able to accomplish everything that was required of me at the time, I returned home with a leg that was very painful. Walking and sitting were slow and very difficult for me.

By praying diligently each morning, I was able to get out of bed and accomplish all that was needed. I began to see steady improvement in the condition of my leg. Then one day while I was outside clearing some underbrush, I tripped over a root. In trying to right myself, I landed with great force and full weight on the same leg.

The pain was severe, but eventually I was able to get back into the house and calm myself. I needed to be at my grandchildren's home early the next morning, to take care of them while their parents were away on a 12-day trip. At this point I was completely unable to bend my leg, and it looked impossible to get into the car. As part of my care for the children, there would be ongoing demands on me to drive them to various activities.

I prayed through the night and slept very little. When my daughter and son-in-law arrived to pick me up, I asked them to pray with me. After a few quiet minutes, we found a way to manage getting me into the car without bending my leg.

After finally getting into their house, I thought, "What a wonderful opportunity to read Science and Health straight through, especially since my grandchildren will be at school all day." It occurred to me to read with a focus on deepening my understanding of the rules given in that book for healing spiritually.

Before Josie-Dee left for school, she showed me three Bible passages she had written down to help her dad heal a leg injury, which had also helped her heal the injury received at the swimming pool. The verses were: "All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth" (Ps. 25:10); "My foot standeth in an even place: in the congregations will I bless the Lord" (Ps. 26:12); and "The Lord is my strength" (Ps. 28:7). I kept her note next to the couch, and referred to it frequently.

Each day the children helped with household errands. They naturally showed me lots of thoughtfulness. Rather than my being the babysitter, I was the one being babysat! Telephone calls came from other people who, without knowing my situation, offered to take the children to soccer practices, piano lessons, and birthday parties. A friend, who is a Christian Science nurse, called unexpectedly and drove some distance to bring practical aids that I needed to get around. I felt loved and cared for.

At times I was afraid I would face continued suffering and restricted activity in the future. But each time these fears threatened to take over, I turned to the healing ideas I was finding in Science and Health and thought about them in connection with my specific situation.

Just as I was finishing the last chapter of the book, a complete healing of my leg came—all at once. In fact, I could hardly believe that I felt so free. I was able to walk perfectly. There was no more pain, no lingering aftereffects, no limitations. I could even run and climb stairs with ease. In fact, I've actually had more strength and vigor in my legs than ever before.

I was, and remain, grateful for an increased certainty that the spiritual truths stated in Science and Health are an effective healing method.
