Severe cold and breathing difficulties healed

I was healed of a severe cold, which overcame me while I was participating in an intensive two-week-long seminar in a distant city. I began not feeling well when I retired on the second evening. By the next morning the symptoms had become so bad that I didn't think I could continue sitting in with the group. I was able to get to a telephone during a break and call a Christian Science practitioner. I had never met nor spoken to her before, but I was confident that her treatment through prayer would be effective. Within ten or fifteen minutes after returning to the conference, I felt a remarkable change for the better. With great joy I felt the embracing, cleansing power of divine Love, and within less than an hour, I was completely free of all symptoms.

Within less than an hour, I was completely free of all [cold] symptoms.

On another occasion, while living in the Northeast, I seemed to suffer during one winter with great breathing and congestion difficulties that I attributed to the dust from our coal-burning stove, combined with the cold weather. When I was outdoors, exerting myself in the least made breathing almost impossible. I was relieved when spring came, but dreaded the approaching winter. In desperation one afternoon, I called a practitioner for treatment. I'll never forget his joyful reminder to me that winter was glorious, and that God had never made anything that could harm me, so I could love both the coal and the crisp weather, rather than fear them. I recalled this statement from the Bible: "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good" (Gen. 1:31). We also talked about the fact that the Christ, ever present in human consciousness, was resurrecting my thought from false beliefs about God's creation, and that we can trust the Christ to do this. Science and Health states that the Christ is ". . . dispelling illusions of the senses," and, in the same paragraph, that "Christ is the true idea voicing good, the divine message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness" (p. 332).

By the time I got off the phone, I was healed, although I did not recognize this fact until several days later, when I realized I had been breathing consistently with perfect ease. Several subsequent winters in that location all proved to be joyful and included vigorous outdoor activities. The coal stove, even though it was clearly sending out coal dust everywhere, no longer caused me the least difficulty.

I am thankful for having been raised by parents who lovingly insisted on our attending Christian Science Sunday School and reading the Weekly Bible Lesson found in the Christian Science Quarterly. They often read and discussed it with my sister and me. Their example continues to be an inspiration.

My gratitude continues to grow for Christ Jesus the Way-shower, for Mary Baker Eddy, who wrote Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, and to God for giving all of us the gift of the Comforter.
