God's help here

Adventures en route from Mexico to Canada

During the spring and summer of 1997, I hiked from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail through the mountains of California, Oregon, and Washington. During this five-month, 2,600-mile journey, I had numerous opportunities to rely on God and simply ponder His creation.

On June 1, I was heading into the final section of desert in the dry southern California portion of the trail just south of Walker Pass and the High Sierras. I had decided to hike this thirty-five-mile stretch without resupplying with water, as there were no water sources near the trail. My plan was to eat dinner at the last possible source and then hike at least ten miles before dark. This would leave me with a long, hot, but feasible twenty-five-mile hike the following day to the next near-trail water source. After dinner, I filled a two-gallon water bag and started walking into the desert.
