Searching for God ... with columnist James M. Wall

A conversation with the former editor of The Christian Century

In February, James M. "Jim" Wall was succeeded by John M. Buchanan, pastor of Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, as editor of The Christian Century. Mr. Wall has become senior contributing editor, and his writing continues to appear regularly in the magazine. He remains the National Council of Churches' representative to the film industry, and continues to teach and lecture on film, religion, and international politics—especially the Middle East.

In a recent interview, we invited Mr. Wall, who came originally from Monroe, Georgia, to look back over his twenty-seven years as editor of The Christian Century. Also, to reflect on the collection of his editorials and personal columns that has been published under the title Hidden Treasures: Searching for God in Modern Culture (The Christian Century Press).

In a foreword to the book, fellow columnist Martin E. Marty writes: "Wall lives in a world where God is active but often in disguise, and where signs of the spirit are waiting to erupt from novels, movie screens, and bully pulpits."
