Iritis healed and vision improved

Just before Christmas four years ago, one eye became painful, then the other. I thought I had strained them, and made an appointment to have my reading prescription changed. Because of the pain, I also called a Christian Science practitioner for treatment. The pain disappeared, but my sight was very poor.

At the optometrist's office, I couldn't read even the largest letter. The eye test was stopped, and a doctor brought in to examine me. He stated that I had iritis and the lenses were fusing together. He recommended treatment, without which he said my situation would be dire.

I signed a waiver and left. It took some courage to declare myself a Christian Scientist to the doctor, as he was so adamant about the need for medical treatment. My husband was an unwavering strength and comfort. I was so grateful for this, because otherwise I would have felt very much alone at that point.

I spoke again to the practitioner, who assured me that I could never lose my sight, because sight is spiritual. Her calm and unfaltering stand for Truth buoyed my thought immediately.

God's love and care for me were evident daily. My dear husband was working at home and did many of the routine things I wasn't able to do. He wrote out some citations from Science and Health in large printing. When I couldn't read those anymore, he set me up in a quiet corner of the house with tapes like the chapter "Christian Science Practice" from Science and Health for me to listen to. This was especially helpful. Our two boys, home for Christmas vacation, provided two more pairs of helping hands. There was healing even in this: it required humility to accept graciously such an abundance of help when one prefers self-sufficiency.

Initially, the only thing I could do was listen for what God wanted me to think and do. I thought of myself as a captive audience of God. It was a wonderful position to be in. I turned my life over to Him.

The practitioner prayed daily; I prayed with the truths I heard on the tapes, and with passages from the Bible and Science and Health that I had memorized. My goal, however, was not to heal or change a physical malady, but to better understand God and my relationship to Him. As I was increasingly successful doing this, the problem gradually diminished.

A hymn (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 64) on one of the tapes was a turning point. It describes the essence of the healing Christ that was gently unfolding to me. In fact, it describes the healing I was experiencing! The first verse says:

From sense to Soul my pathway
lies before me,
From mist and shadow into
Truth's clear day;
The dawn of all things real is
breaking o'er me,
My heart is singing: I have
found the way.

After about six weeks, I noticed that my reading glasses seemed too strong. After thoroughly examining my eyes, the doctor—the same one who had previously examined me—found no evidence of the disease. In addition, my vision had improved. My gratitude for this healing is boundless.
