In 1995 I inadvertently poured boiling marmalade over one hand. The pain was intense and the hand very red as I cleaned off the marmalade. I declared out loud and vehemently "the scientific statement of being," which includes the following lines: "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all" (Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 468). Wanting to be obedient to the instruction in Science and Health to look away from the body, I refused to look further at the hand and continued with my task. The full quotation reads: "Look away from the body into Truth and Love, the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and immortality" (p. 261).

The thought that there would be blisters I recognised as not from God, who knows only his own perfect, flawless idea. Likewise, the thought that I would have to keep that hand out of hot water when washing up was denied.

As I accepted the spiritual truths from the Bible and Science and Health that flooded into my consciousness, the pain receded. By the time the marmalade was in jars, the washing up was done, and the clearing away completed, the hand was painless and clear.
