Before the summer holidays my Sunday School teacher...
Before the summer holidays my Sunday School teacher asked me to learn the Bible verse "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind" (II Tim. 1:7).
One night when I was at our friends' holiday house for dinner, I started to feel sick. I could barely eat my dinner and I felt as if I would throw up. I told my mum and she reminded me about the Bible verse I had learnt. I sat down in a very comfortable rocking chair by myself and thought about it a bit.
I knew Mum was praying, too. When our friends brought out some lollies, I realized I was feeling much better and I ate some. They were delicious and I enjoyed the visit very much.

At this time our family was holidaying with two of our children at our small cabin. Earlier that day I had been concerned by the constant bickering between Noriel and her older sister. After a time of futilely trying to keep the peace, I had closed the door on the noise to pray about the situation. Very soon harmony once again prevailed.
Later that evening we all went to our friends' home for dinner. We had barely started eating when Noriel said she felt ill. I had already learnt, during a quiet talk with Noriel, that she had been asked in Sunday School to memorize the Bible verse. We had looked it up together and talked about how she could apply it to the issue of conflict with her sister.
As I settled Noriel into a chair, I reminded her of the verse, which had come flooding back into thought. Our friends were also Christian Scientists, so there was a supportive atmosphere for Noriel and me to pray. The fact that "God hath not given us the spirit of fear" enabled me to reject fearful thoughts for her, because they had no authority from Him. Then I considered the thoughts that were authorized by God; these thoughts focused on divine qualities that bring healing. I also recognized that the healing of bickering that had taken place earlier could not be overshadowed by another erroneous claim called sickness.
We happily resumed our dinner, confident of a healing result, and a short time later this was confirmed when Noriel rejoined the activities feeling perfectly well.
It has been valuable for Noriel and me to see the relevance of Sunday School in her daily life, and I am most grateful for this precious part of Church.
