Can you measure God?

The Bible commands: "Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in meteyard, in weight, or in measure. Just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin, shall ye have: I am the Lord your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt" (Lev. 19:35, 36).

We do not think of a hin very often, nor of an ephah or an omer. These are the names of weights and measures that were used by the ancient Hebrews. We have different terms today for determining amounts, lengths, weights, heights, depths, and distances. But the purpose is the same—to be equitable and accurate. We are careful to measure correctly and to use the form of measurement that properly applies to the object being measured. Cherries are seldom measured by length, or light by the pound! If the measurements does not apply, the results cannot be meaningful or valid.

God, divine Spirit, cannot be measured by volume, length, or duration; nor can He be carried away in a barrel. Spirit is infinite and immortal; it cannot be measured by days or years, depth or height.

Man, whose true identity is the spiritual reflection of God, is no more to be measured by height, weight, color, personality type, or length of days than is God. The ordinary and much-used standards of measurement just do not apply to the real man. They are not capable of adequately determining the abilities or accomplishments of man, the worth or potential of man. Man in God's image is neither tall nor short, young nor old, black nor white, quick nor slow; and the question of nationality does not apply to man. As Christ Jesus demonstrated, man is completely a reflection of his Maker, God, and he images forth the qualities of God only. These perfect qualities are eternal, unalterable, and limitless. This is the true status of man.

A girl who was helping in a class of preschool children took a child on her lap lovingly to comfort him. When his tears were dried he looked down and said in surprise, "Astrid, you've got chocolate knees!" The love that she had expressed to him, and which he had felt, had nothing to do with skin color. It outshone physicality. There are no barriers to love! Each one has a special place in God's creation, but all equally can express Christlike qualities. The Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, states: "Identity is the reflection of Spirit, the reflection in multifarious forms of the living Principle, Love. Soul is the substance, Life, and intelligence of man, which is individualized, but not in matter" (p. 477). Identity is not confined within the mélange of class, race, or age. It is not determined by the color of one's knees, whether chocolate, vanilla, or butterscotch!

Despite the testimony of the physical senses, man truly exists as the image of God. Man's spirituality not only prevents him from being defined by any material measurement, it also ensures that he cannot be trapped by or in any material situation or condition. No dream of materiality can hold him or erect barriers for him. His freedom is boundless.

We will increasingly experience the unlimited good that God provides as we come to understand our true nature. This divine goodness is always present; therefore healing does not need to be delayed. No length of time is a determining factor in healing. Ever-present good knows no time limits.

This is the truth of man's being. It stands ready to be seen and understood—with healing results. Truth is not parceled out sparingly. God, Truth, has no limits, as we learn when we turn to God trustingly, with no reservations.
