Spiritual exploration—the best kind of adventure

Often our sense of adventure is worldly, perhaps colored by cinematic portrayals of reckless but likable characters involved in breathtaking exploits. But have we ever considered adventure from a spiritual standpoint? "We live in an age of Love's divine adventure to be All-in-all," writes Mary Baker Eddy (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany).

Far more significant than feats of derring-do is the opportunity we have at this moment to begin breaking away from the age-old limitations of materialism and to cultivate the liberating understanding of spiritual reality, of Love's allness and supremacy.

Christ Jesus showed us this reality through his teachings and healing works. He spoke of God's kingdom as within us, not as some distant place in an undefined afterlife. He indicated that this kingdom is actually the consciousness, here and now, of the creator's perfect government of man and the universe. Material-mindedness, with its sensualism, is quick to deny God's control. But healing by spiritual means, as Jesus illustrated, sweeps away material pretensions to power and proves that God, Love, indeed is All-in-all. It points to the true nature of man and the universe as totally spiritual.
