A short time before my mother was to be married, she became...

A short time before my mother was to be married, she became ill and went to a physician. His examination revealed that she had tuberculosis and was not expected to live. Her mother had just become interested in Christian Science and gave her a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and suggested she read it.

For three days and nights my mother drank in the truth she was reading. At the end of that time she felt well, so she returned to the doctor for an examination. Her healing was confirmed. She was then married in a few weeks, as originally planned. The healing was permanent, just from reading and studying Science and Health. Thus began my mother's devotion to the study of Christian Science.

When I was three years old I was enrolled in a Christian Science Sunday School. The first healing I recall took place when I was about eight years of age. I was healed in two weeks of a serious case of rheumatic fever through the prayers of my mother and a Christian Science practitioner.

Through the years I have had many healings through prayer to God alone, for which I am most grateful. Some of these were healings of flu, boils, gangrene in an arm, mumps when an adult, as well as the resolution of financial and human relationship difficulties.

My children had the privilege of being raised in a Christian Science Sunday School, and they too have had many wonderful healings through reliance on Christian Science. One in particular stands out. My youngest son was healed quickly of a broken wrist and a separated shoulder. The injuries occurred while he was playing on a university athletic team. (X-rays confirmed the break in the wrist.) The very next weekend he was fully healed and was voted "most valuable player" of all the teams competing that weekend.

One morning I woke early, and as I got out of bed I noticed that the lower part of my pajamas was soaked with blood. A blood vessel had burst, and there was no sign that the flow would stop. At first I was afraid. But then I prayed to understand what the first chapter of Genesis states: "God created man in his own image." I reasoned that, because man is in reality God's likeness, he cannot be injured or unlike God in any way. As I thought about this my fear subsided. I felt at peace and knew that all was well. This soon became evident in my body; I was healed.

I am humbly grateful to be a member of The Mother Church and a branch church. I am particularly grateful for the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy, as a guide not only for the Christian Science church but for each individual member as well.
