As the fir-clad mountains and majestic hills are round about...
As the fir-clad mountains and majestic hills are round about Levidi, Arcadia, so the love of God embraces His infinite and eternal creation. This testimony comes from the heart of Greece.
Before I knew of Christian Science, the admonition of the ancients, "Know thyself," was a precious family motto that sang in my heart. From early childhood I had sought and pursued education and learning. At one juncture, I was teaching adult classes in addition to operating a studio for voice, speech, and oral expression. On a Wednesday evening at closing time, a kind woman invited me to attend a Wednesday testimony meeting at a branch church. There I was introduced to a Christian Science practitioner who was a newly elected Second Reader in her branch Church of Christ, Scientist. She inquired about my work. We both agreed to help each other. She helped me as a practitioner, and I coached her in the reading of the Bible at the Sunday church services.
Although I had a deep reverence for the Holy Bible, loved its universal appeal, and appreciated its religious influence throughout the centuries, I needed to understand its spiritual message and make it my own. I began a course of study. And indeed I found the language of Spirit, the new tongue. A passage from Proverbs held special significance for me: "Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established." The Word of God, divine law, order, harmony, holiness, beauty, and glory illumined my consciousness. Divine Love revealed to me the Way of Christ, Truth.
Before long I became a member of both a branch church and The Mother Church. I will always be grateful to be among workers serving the Cause of Christian Science. With Christ Jesus as the great Teacher and healer, and with the Comforter, divine Science, I feel we are equipped to work and to find solutions to the problems we confront.
I can humbly testify of many proofs of God's care. I have experienced protection while traveling by air, ocean, and land. There have been harmonious family relationships through many years, and a happy marriage has enriched my life with peace and joy. I have been healed of symptoms of arthritis in one hand and a sprained ankle.
At one time I became very ill from apparent food poisoning. That evening I had to be at church to serve as a translator of testimonies at the Wednesday testimony meeting. I asked a member of our church to pray for me. Her loving prayers were effective. I regained my equilibrium and steadiness that evening in church and returned home completely healed.
Christian Science has not only benefited me but has helped members of my family. My husband had smoked cigarettes for thirty years. At his request, I prayed earnestly and patiently for him over a period. Then one day I realized that divine Love was truly in control of our home; I also saw clearly that God's man has never been touched by impurity. After four days my husband said to me, "You know, I don't miss smoking, and in fact, I feel as if I have never smoked." The healing was permanent.
For branch church activity, which has included teaching in the Sunday School, working in the Reading Room, serving as clerk, being member and chairman of the executive board, and serving terms as First and Second Reader (speaking in both Greek and English), I am humbly grateful.
Above all, I am thankful to our creator, God, for Church, and for opportunities to meet people of all cultures who have embraced the Science of Christianity.
