When I was approximately twenty years old, I wanted to...

When I was approximately twenty years old, I wanted to know more about God. My father couldn't answer all my questions, but he arranged for a teacher of religion to instruct me. This didn't result in my finding the spiritual answers I was seeking. Many years went by, and I was still searching for an understanding of God.

Then one day someone told me about Christian Science and mentioned that there was a branch church near my home. The following day I went to the Christian Science Reading Room. The two people who worked there were very kind. I bought a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.

I was eager to read this book. In the beginning I didn't understand much of it. There were many statements that required deep thought, so I made an earnest study of the book. Before long I became a member of The Mother Church. I was very happy to have a growing spiritual understanding of God at last.

Through the study and practice of Christian Science I have experienced many healings. Financial problems have been solved, relationship have been harmonized, and loneliness has been overcome.

Several years ago a lump appeared on my neck. It became enlarged and painful, and I was afraid. This verse in Isaiah helped me overcome the fear: "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."

One day I pondered the subject of spiritual causation, recognizing that God, Spirit, is the creator, and that anything unlike good, God didn't create. Thus disease has no real origin and has never touched God's spiritual idea, man. I kept pondering these spiritual truths steadfastly.

When the situation seemed to worsen, I was tempted to give up. But then I read the following sentence in Science and Health, which strengthened me: "It requires courage to utter truth; for the higher Truth lifts her voice, the louder will error scream, until its inarticulate sound is forever silenced in oblivion." Soon the lump began to diminish, and before long it disappeared completely, leaving no scar. For this wonderful healing I am deeply grateful.

I am indeed very grateful to God for Christ Jesus, who showed us the way to live, and for the gift Mrs. Eddy has given in sharing Christian Science with the world.

I would like to give written gratitude for a healing of paralysis my son experienced.

Before I learned about Christian Science, I was enrolled in a medical nurses' training program to study to become a registered nurse. During this period, one of the lectures I attended taught all the ways that a person could contract poliomyelitis. It also showed details of the symptoms of this disease through filmstrips and a movie.

Many years later, after having become a student of Christian Science, I found myself, with my family, in a physical setting that brought back scenes from those filmstrips and movie. My younger son, then two years old, showed symptoms of polio.

We had just moved to a new country and were living in a rural area without a telephone at home. I drove to the nearest telephone to call for the prayerful help of a Christian Science practitioner. I couldn't speak at first, but just sobbed. While I don't remember exactly what the practitioner said to me, I felt uplifted and was sure that God's help was at hand for our son. I then explained why I had called. I thanked the practitioner and drove home.

I continued to pray, affirming that this child was actually spiritual, created in God's image. By the next three days there was strong improvement in his condition, and by the fifth day he was completely back to normal. The boy who was healed is now an adult.

I am grateful for the understanding of God and man's relationship to Him as taught in Christian Science. Through this teaching I have experienced many healings over the years. A skin disease, influenza, an impacted abscessed wisdom tooth, and grief have been healed. Home and employment have been found, and financial needs and emotional problems have been solved. These and many other situations have been opportunities to prove God's allness and love.
