Gratitude for the many blessings Christian Science has brought...
Gratitude for the many blessings Christian Science has brought to our family impels me to share some of them as encouragement for others.
Some years ago, our older son began experiencing severe headaches and complaining that at times his vision was darkened and he was not able to see. A Christian Science practitioner was asked to do prayerful work for us. My husband, who is not a Christian Scientist, agreed to go with me to visit the practitioner. We left the practitioner's office with a conviction of God's unfailing care for our son.
During this time, my husband's job was quite demanding on him, and there seemed to be tension in the workplace as well as in the home. But having witnessed many healings in Christian Science, I was confident that healing in our home would proceed harmoniously.
A calm, peaceful, more joyful sense of good began to be felt in our home. Soon the physical symptoms our son had been manifesting began to abate and then ceased completely. Also, my husband was offered an opportunity to transfer to another city, and he gladly accepted. As Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy states (p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." This statement had indeed been proved to us to be true!
More recently, I had a skin condition that seemed to fester and did not clear up. Because of fear on my part I called a practitioner, who agreed to support me through prayer. It became very clear to me that I had been entertaining some harmful character traits that I knew were not part of man's true identity as the perfect, spiritual child of God. Selfishness, self-will, self-pity, were increasingly replaced with a more loving, grateful, unselfish nature. Hymn 109 from the Christian Science Hymnal was most helpful during this time. The physical condition soon was entirely healed.
On another occasion our younger daughter was protected beautifully as she was river-rafting with her older brother. Her raft tipped over and she fell into the water, which was over her head. When the current began taking her swiftly downstream, she cried out for her brother's help. As he swam to get her, he told her to be calm and not to be afraid. He reached her quickly and scooped her up to safety. This was a Sunday afternoon, and they had earlier attended the Christian Science Sunday School, where they had discussed the Bible Lesson (outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly) for that week: "God the Preserver of Man"! I am confident that the truths shared that morning undergirded our daughter's safety. As we read in Science and Health (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings."
I am very grateful for Christian Science.
