There are no small testimonies
Giving thanks for God's care is an essential part of worship, and we shouldn't discount any proof of His healing power.
Driving home from a recent Wednesday evening testimony meeting in my church—a branch Church of Christ, Scientist,—I pondered the opening words of several of the testifiers: "This is only a small testimony
Toward the end of the hour a woman had acknowledged that feeling her healing was too insignificant to mention was not going to prevent her from getting to her feet any longer. Her refusal to yield to whatever would muffle the voice of truth was valuable in itself, and what she shared was indeed significant.
But I thought of two times when Christ Jesus spoke of mustard seeds. Anyone who has seen such a seed knows how tiny it is! In one parable he says, "The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof." Matt. 13:31, 32.
He also uses this minuscule seed as a symbol in referring to faith: "If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you." Matt. 17:20.
Obviously, human faith is shown not to be the source of the power. The power of Truth is the issue. When it touches our lives in any way, we become conscious of God's allness. Can there ever be a "small truth" when its source is God, who is Truth?
Referring to her discovery, the Science of Christ, Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health: "If mathematics should present a thousand different examples of one rule, the proving of one example would authenticate all the others. A simple statement of Christian Science, if demonstrated by healing, contains the proof of all here said of Christian Science." Science and Health, pp. 546–547.
In times of illness, pressures, world crises, we may feel so overwhelmed that it doesn't seem possible to know all that's needed to bring about healing. But did Jesus say a moving van of mustard seeds, of faith, was necessary? No.
The healing power of divine Truth is invoked even as we begin the search to understand our true being as God's spiritual creation. We come to see that man is Love's pure expression, not a mixture of chemical elements. Step by step we can go forward to prove the truth of our spiritual status as God's man. "Being is holiness, harmony, immortality," Science and Health states. "It is already proved that a knowledge of this, even in small degree, will uplift the physical and moral standard of mortals, will increase longevity, will purify and elevate character. Thus progress will finally destroy all error, and bring immortality to light." Ibid., p. 492. What promise we have in those words "small degree."
In the meantime what we have to share with others—those small testimonies showing proof of God's help in our daily experience—can be vital. Whenever we demonstrate the healing effect of turning to God for help in time of need, it's worth sharing. Yes, some healings appear much bigger or more dramatic than others, but doesn't the real importance lie in the demonstration of spiritual truths rather than in the size of the discord needing correction?
Only a few words, simply spoken with love, accuracy, and sincerity, could be precisely what someone else needs and has come to hear. Those few words can plant the seeds of healing.
