In Christian Science we learn that allaying fear is the first step...
In Christian Science we learn that allaying fear is the first step in Christian Science treatment. Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy states (p. 410): "Christian scientific practice begins with Christ's keynote of harmony, 'Be not afraid!'" In the following experience, the prayerful handling of fear at the outset contributed greatly to the healing outcome.
One afternoon over a year ago, I climbed onto the roof of our home in order to clear leaves from a clogged rain gutter. In so doing I placed too much weight on the gutter and it pulled away from its fastenings. I fell about twelve feet, landing headfirst on a stone wall. My first thought was that I was relieved I hadn't broken anything. However, I then noticed that I was bleeding profusely from an area on the back of the head.
I went into the house, where a family member called a Christian Science practitioner to pray for me. Another call was made to a Christian Science nurse.
There was fear on the part of my family. Yet I knew that the practitioner was praying to allay fear. I was also praying for myself, and my wife, who had expressed many helpful spiritual truths, was praying too. Later I was reminded of these words of the Apostle John (I John 4:18): "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear." This statement was most appropriate because it points to the power of divine Love to govern and heal.
The bleeding subsided. I then spent a fairly restful night. Within two days, bathing of the area was possible, and all evidence of injury faded in an orderly fashion.
Throughout the experience I expressed gratitude to God for the teachings of Christian Science, for the faithful support of the practitioner, and for the help of my wife and the Christian Science nurse. Fear had been effectively refuted through prayer soon after the injury occurred, and this contributed to my quick healing. I continue to be grateful for this healing, which was complete in every respect.

I am glad to verify my husband's testimony. Persistent dedication in holding to the truths of his real spiritual nature brought about a complete recovery. The wound healed quickly, and hair soon grew back in that area of the head. Also, the incident has not discouraged my husband from undertaking other repair work where heights are involved. Our family has had other healings as well. Christian Science is a blessing indeed.
