Having been raised in Christian Science, I have had the opportunity...

Having been raised in Christian Science, I have had the opportunity to experience many healings. These include healings of a badly sprained arm and severe back pain. Here I would like to relate a healing that occurred over a year ago, and that has remained special to me.

I had been hired as an assistant to a controller in a medium-sized company. While I had had no accounting experience or training in this field, I am considered good with figures and I learned this work quickly. Everything went well until about three months into my employment when the controller I was working under was suddenly fired. This occurred during our busiest season.

At that point I was promoted to the position of controller, a job I felt unqualified for because I knew only parts of the accounting system. On top of this, I had no assistant and would have to hire and train one. The anxiety and fear I experienced were severe, for the situation appeared out of my control.

At once I turned to God, knowing that I could not be put into a situation I could not handle. I knew that God would guide me to make the right moves. I continued to pray along these lines, but the material picture still seemed overwhelming. I had trouble sleeping and continued to suffer extreme anxiety and even despair at times.

Resignation was a possibility I had considered, but I concluded this would be selfish and would not be in the company's best interest. I felt there must be an answer that could bless all involved. In The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany by Mrs. Eddy we read (p. 252): "The entire purpose of true education is to make one not only know the truth but live it—to make one enjoy doing right, make one not work in the sunshine and run away in the storm, but work midst clouds of wrong, injustice, envy, hate; and wait on God, the strong deliverer, who will reward righteousness and punish iniquity. 'As thy days, so shall thy strength be.'"

Elsewhere in the same book Mrs. Eddy writes (pp. 149-150): "Remember, thou canst be brought into no condition, be it ever so severe, where Love has not been before thee and where its tender lesson is not awaiting thee. Therefore despair not nor murmur, for that which seeketh to save, to heal, and to deliver, will guide thee, if thou seekest this guidance." Both these passages inspired me to persevere and seek Mind's guidance for the proper solution.

Shortly after I had begun my work as a controller, I was visiting a brother and mentioned to him that I needed an assistant. He directed me to a longtime friend of our family who was unemployed, had been studying accounting, and was eager for work experience in that field. I immediately hired him, and we worked together extremely well. I knew the way the system was run, and he had the technical knowledge of accounting. We meshed together perfectly in the work, and I thanked God for this wonderful development. I feel that I was blessed, my assistant was blessed, and the company was blessed.

Prior to the change in my job I had been accepted for Christian Science class instruction. For quite a while I felt unsure of being able to follow through with class because of pressures at work. Yet I did not tell my Christian Science teacher that I would not be able to make it, as I still held out hope. I just knew it was right for me to be in the class, and I felt assured that God would provide the means. In fact everything did work out wonderfully as a result of prayer. At the time the class was held, my mother had a break in her own work so that she could fill in for me at the office. Consequently, I had a beautiful, unpressured, unworried time at class. Overall, I truly felt I had been delivered from the depths.

I am most grateful to God that Mrs. Eddy shared with us this practical Science whereby we can learn to heal as Christ Jesus did. And I am especially thankful for the help that God provides in the meeting of every need.
