FOR CHILDREN
Do you need a good idea?
Sally really liked the dance drama at school. The main character was a bear, played by the tallest child in the class, who looked quite realistic in a furry costume. The bear prowled about the stage, rearing up on his hind legs when the music was loud and exciting. Either by themselves or in groups, the other children had to make up little scenes to act out when they met the bear. Sally was pleased with the scene she had made up.
Then she was away from school for a few days, and during rehearsal when she returned, Sally started crying.
"Whatever's the matter, Sally?" the teacher asked.
"You know that scene I made up for meeting the bear?"
"Yes, it was a good one."
"Well, someone else has taken it, and she's using it now!" Sally wailed.
"Never mind," said the teacher. "You can think of another one."
"But I can't!" Sally said. "The others have already got all the good ones."
"Oh no, I'm sure you can think of another scene if you just listen quietly."
What the teacher knew, from many experiences of her own, is that God is Mind, and is the source of all good ideas. His outpouring of good thoughts to His beloved children (that's who we really are) is never ending. Good thoughts can never be used up, and there always enough for each one of us. No one can really take the good that's meant for another, because each of us has an abundant supply.
You see, God always gives good, and acknowledging this brings into our experience whatever we really need.
The teacher knew too that intelligence and understanding are qualities of God, which His children express freely.
Soon another idea came to Sally, and she was able to prepare her costume in time. The day of the dance drama came; it went well, and the children and parents thoroughly enjoyed the performance.
Afterward the teacher said, "Did you like your second scene, Sally?"
Sally answered, "Yes. It was better than the first one."
Christian Science teaches, "God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 307. This is something that Mrs. Eddy wrote to show us where good comes from.
How lovely that we can each apply this to any need we have, at any time, and see the results of God's goodness pouring out to us.
What if your homework is to come up with a story or a poem, or if you are asked to write something in a test, and you say to yourself, "I can't think of anything to write"?
Don't accept that suggestion! Be sure that God is the source of all good; then if you quietly listen, and thank Him, you can expect one good idea and then another, and another—just as many as you need.
But take care that you aren't so busy saying, "I can't think of anything," that you don't hear the good thoughts!
Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever:... he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding: he revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.
