Breakfast is ready

A big black bear lumbered across the road in front of our car as we drove to the top of a high mountain in New England. It was very early in the morning, and I imagined that the bear was as hungry as we were for some breakfast. We had no idea where we would find a place to eat, but as we reached the crest of the mountain and stopped to admire the magnificent view, I turned my head, and there on the other side of the road was a huge sign, a carved wood maple leaf with the words "Breakfast is Ready" on it. We were ravenous and hastened to this restaurant for a most memorable meal.

As we left I remembered those welcomed words "Breakfast is Ready" and began to think of the Bible Lessons found in the Christian Science Quarterly. They are always ready, always waiting for us to enjoy their practical, demonstrable truths. They always have a special message for each one of us, as we with happy anticipation pray for enlightenment and yearn to know God better.

When I was a new mother and had an infant to care for, my days were topsy-turvy with legitimate busyness. Caring for the child began at dawn's early light, and the demands of my household seemed endless. The study of the Bible Lesson, which I had been used to doing early, was put aside to later in the morning or even later in the day. I could not get my priorities straight. What a juggling act I got into! In my thinking I justified this, for weren't the needs of the baby legitimate? In addition, my husband needed to have his breakfast and get off to business. It was all logical and justifiable, I thought, but things still seemed out of kilter.
