My parents relied on the power of Christian Science to heal a severe breathing difficulty I developed as a year-old infant. Both a Christian Science nurse and a dedicated Christian Science practitioner were called to help my parents at this time. The healing was complete and permanent, and it took place within a short period of time.

At seven years of age I came home one day with the spine of a palm leaf deeply embedded in the calf of one leg. I became less fearful as my mother read to me from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Some days later my mother was helping me understand this statement on page 412 of Science and Health: "Realize the presence of health and the fact of harmonious being, until the body corresponds with the normal conditions of health and harmony." At that moment my father showed me that the palm leaf spine had worked its way out of my leg. I had felt nothing. This healing was complete. There were no scars or aftereffects.

Just over a year ago, during an all-day hike, I had proof of the security of relying on God's tender care. Though the climb to the top of the mountain was relatively easy, when we were making our descent it quickly became apparent that the old boots I was wearing were not going to keep me from slipping and sliding down the now frozen trail. My companions and I had not planned well, and we were still on the trail at dusk. As night began to fall, we were faced with the prospect of navigating the now treacherous path with only a flickering flashlight to guide us. At that point God seemed very far away, and my thoughts were confused and fearful.

As we continued to traverse patches of ice, and I was falling down more and more frequently, finally I realized that this just wasn't right. With this recognition came the calm assurance that in the very spot where we were was the comforting presence of God, in whom I had learned long ago to trust. My fear was allayed, and the rest of the way I was able to lean on one of my companions while my thoughts were really leaning on the goodness and safety of God. We made it down the mountain without further problems, and though I'll never again wear worn boots on a hike, this instance of God's care illustrated to me the Bible truth (Ps. 46:1) "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."

I'm very grateful for the blessing of knowing how to turn to God for every need, and for recognizing that the healing power of good is available to all.

I would like to express my humble thanks to God for Mrs. Eddy's discovery of the healing power of Truth, as revealed in Christ Jesus' ministry and in its application to everyday needs. It has been my privilege to serve in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, a Christian Science college organization, and to receive class instruction from a dedicated teacher of Christian Science. These have all blessed my life.
