Invisible certainties
When a baby is born, his parents don't exclaim in panic, "He doesn't have any teeth!" There's more apt to be patient waiting for that first little white tooth. They know that their baby does have teeth, but they're not visible yet. The parents expect the first tooth will appear shortly and rejoice when it does.
Do we have confidence that whatever is needful can appear in our lives, even when there's no visible sign that it will? In God's kingdom the unfoldment of that which is right and good is not just a fairly certain thing; God's law produces good without exception. We can trust that absolute law of good. Understanding what God's law is and how we can apply it helps us to be certain that the appearing of good is inevitable.
Christian Science restores primitive Christianity. It is the very law of God to be recognized and demonstrated for what it is; it's not a method we can use to get whatever we want. Christian Science is the way of yielding to God's holy presence, and thereby demonstrating His goodness. True health, harmony, love, right activity, proceed from God and are indications of His care for man. His Christ, the ever-present ideal of Truth, impels their outward expression in our lives. In truth we actually include this substance of good in consciousness because we are God's very reflection, spiritual man. We don't have to "obtain" the good that we already include. Man has all good from God because he reflects all good from God.
We read in the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, "Spirit is the only substance, the invisible and indivisible infinite God." Science and Health, p. 335. As we prayerfully live in accord with the law of God, Spirit, we do begin to experience the visible evidence of His care for us. Wholehearted turning to God's law is necessary, and as we look to Spirit alone, we find verification for the spiritual truth that good is ever present because God is ever present.
In her book No and Yes Mrs. Eddy writes, "God's law is in three words, 'I am All' ...." No and Yes, p. 30. The law of God is the law of His ever-presence and supreme love. God's law is not an arbitrary decision imposed upon us by an unreasonable God who gives some people good things and withholds good from others. God's law is the fact of what He is being and doing. God is divine Principle, maintaining man and the universe forever in harmony and order as witness to His divine perfection. God's law of good is always in effect, always the only law there is. His ever-presence means that His reflection, man, is always complete, lacking nothing necessary to express harmony.
How can we visibly prove the truth that God's law provides what we need? The Bible gives us a concept to consider. The writer of Hebrews says, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." And he continues further on, "He that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." Heb. 11:1, 6.
The faith that brings results is absolute reliance on what we know of God's law. Even if we see little visible sign of God's goodness, as we look away from the physical evidence and apply the law of God to our needs we feel the effects of divine law. Applying divine law means knowing that God is. God is divine Principle. He is always present. God and man are coexistent. God never withholds any good from His idea, man. Nor is there any circumstance, power, or influence apart from God to interfere with the inevitable appearance of good. There is nothing to oppose God's law. Our prayerful insistence and spiritual assurance that God and His goodness are ever present bring the law of God to bear on our thoughts and in our lives. Truth dispels the error of believing that good is absent, and we become conscious of the harmony God is bestowing on us.
In God's kingdom all good and right activity is present now. The more certain we become of His ever-presence, the less waiting time there will be between our awareness of a need and finding that need met. Christ Jesus certainly proved this true in his healing work.
Jesus was so conscious that health is the actual and constant condition of God's man that he said to the man at the pool of Bethesda, who had been incapacitated for thirty-eight years, "Rise, take up thy bed, and walk." The Bible says, "And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked." John 5:8, 9.
It may seem to the distrusting human mind that good is never going to come. But as we trustingly yield to God's will of good for us, then nothing can stop that good from appearing in whatever form is best suited for our needs.
The continual appearing of good is natural and inevitable because God is constantly expressing His goodness in man. The very fact that we are aware of a need for some specific aspect of good in our lives can remind us that the presence of this good is already available to be demonstrated. And we can prove it.
As we trust and apply His law, we may be certain that His goodness will become visible right where we need it most—in our daily lives.
