Hidden secrets

Sometimes the many things deeply hidden in human consciousness are seemingly unknown to the individual. Yet many of our difficulties and illnesses appear to stem from these buried beliefs and fears.

In the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, a paragraph that is particularly relevant to this subject invites earnest attention. The marginal heading for that paragraph is "Buried secrets." This awakening passage states, "Do not suppose that any mental concept is gone because you do not think of it." Science and Health, p. 87.

The surface thinking of an individual can be very apparent both to himself and others. But what about these hidden thoughts? The criticisms. The doubts. The blaming. The excusing of self. Such oftentimes become so habitual that they are allowed to work in thought practically unrecognized.

The glory of Christian Science lies in its total comprehensiveness. Nothing is left out. Nothing can withstand the prayerful application of divine law if the work is done deeply, sacredly, and conscientiously enough.

Christ Jesus, the master Christian, read the thought of those with whom he came in contact better than anyone else who has ever lived. He healed all kinds of disease and other difficulties. He did not read thought as a mesmerist or clairvoyant does. But because of his absolute knowledge of God, Mind, as All-in-all, whatever was hidden from the conscious thought of his patient just had to surface to be uprooted and healed.

Considerable time may pass before such buried thoughts come to light. For instance, when the writer was a very small child, and before she became a Christian Scientist, her mother passed on very suddenly. It was a great shock. At the large and impressive funeral "Nearer, my God, to Thee" was sung. Years passed. The hurt had become deeply buried. Then Christian Science came into her life.

During one Wednesday evening testimony meeting in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, that precious hymn was sung. She became violently ill and had to leave the service. While she did not then understand why this all came about, she kept pondering the hymn. After some time the paragraph in Science and Health about hidden thoughts was discovered. She thus became aware that this deep, buried sorrow had never been healed. The singing of the hymn had brought the problem to the surface for eradication. And as a result of this realization, she was able to be freed from her grief.

Very strong impressions are made on thought by both happy and discordant happenings, whether the events are close at hand or many years distant. The wonder of the study and application of this mighty Science of Christianity is that it will cover the whole situation if one will allow it to do so. Scientific prayer can silence belief in a personal self sufficiently to let Christ, Truth, work clear to the bottom of thought, cleansing it of the falsities of personal sense.

One does not go on a witch hunt in endeavoring to apply Christian Science to any problem. But he does allow the searchlight of this total, eternal Science to play on thought. Whatever it is essential to correct in bringing about the healing can thereby surface to be handled. A very dear hymn includes the lines, "Blow, winds of God, awake and blow/The mists of earth away." Christian Science Hymnal, No. 142. These searching, cleansing, refreshing "winds of God" can blow thought cleaner than the blue skies above us.

Clinging to any false belief, known or unknown, is denying the allness and goodness of God. Dropping whatever would cloud thought and prevent the fullness of Spirit, divine Principle, from completely occupying thought can heal the most vicious, depleting disease if our commitment to Truth is genuine and full. God is a total God, the only cause. To allow any false belief or consideration to dominate thought would be to deny the totality of goodness, wholeness, of infinite Spirit and Mind.

The Bible states, "God requireth that which is past." Eccl. 3:15. Why? Because if we allow anything that is ungodlike to occupy thought, anything that rejects infinite good and love, we are surrendering room in thought that belongs solely to God, good, our real Father-Mother. To surrender whatever is ungodlike heals, comforts, and blesses to an untold depth.

A hymn tells us, "Before your feet Life's pearl is cast." Hymnal, No. 391. This pearl is the Science or law of God that Mrs. Eddy has discovered for us. Pure Christian Science does not allow for any opposite beliefs to occupy thought or influence it. Right at this moment, infinite good is present and available to all. This Science is not just positive thinking, and it has to be heeded totally if one would be well, capable, productive, whole. In reality, there is no room for old falsities to crowd out the good that is ours to experience and express. Whatever is good is from God, and under divine Principle can be demonstrated as a law in our lives right now and here, thus nullifying and obliterating any hidden, buried misconceptions of life and being.
