What are we trying to cure?

Some years ago I was taking a friend, a Christian Scientist, to our Wednesday evening testimony meeting. On the way he remarked, "Speaking of testimony meetings, you know, I have never testified to a personal Christian Science healing—simply because I have never had one."

I was quiet for a while and then observed, "This was once my experience, too. In my case, I eventually found that the reason I hadn't actually experienced its healing power was that I had been trying to cure physical difficulties as if they were part of God's reality—something real I had to get rid of."

I related how, in desperation, I had gone to see a Christian Science practitioner for prayerful help with a physical problem. He pointed out the misapprehension in my metaphysical treatment. He asked, "What are you trying to cure? A physical defect or your belief in a physical defect?" He then referred me to what the Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in one of her publications: "God's law is in three words, 'I am All;' and this perfect law is ever present to rebuke any claim of another law." No and Yes, p. 30. This revelation jolted me. I saw that I had been trying to fight the apparent physical defect, instead of handling my belief that God's allness could include something I had to overcome. In no time, the trouble was over.

That blessed practitioner, as I told my friend, emphasized the vital point that in Christian Science one must distinguish between working to cure physicality or sensation, and working with the purpose of dissolving one's mortal belief that God's spiritual universe could contain something physical to go wrong!

No matter what the trouble seems to be, whether a physical or mental disability, the need is to deny—on the basis of God's allness—that the difficulty has fundamental reality. We can refuse to acknowledge anything but the fullness of Truth, God, as revealed in the teachings of Christ Jesus and the Comforter, divine Science. We can remember, too, that wonderful promise in Proverbs: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Prov. 3:5, 6.

God is Love; God is the All-Father and supreme in all things, as Christ Jesus taught. When we experience what seems to be a frightening illness, serious injury, or a deeply depressing set of circumstances, then is the time to declare silently but very firmly: "I know that God is All. However real and frightening this condition may appear to be, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is unreal!"

We must discern that God reigns supreme and that we actually reflect Him. We must realize that it is impossible for physical beliefs to affect God's man—our real selfhood. If the error still persists, then we keep on clearing out wrong thoughts, knowing that the only reality is God, good. Refusing to be deterred, we must win in the end, because we know absolutely, without question, that Truth, God, is the only power.

Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, explains this clearly in her writings and emphasizes time and again that we must hold to the ideal of Truth in order to be healed. As she says in the textbook, Science and Health: "In Science, all being is eternal, spiritual, perfect, harmonious in every action. Let the perfect model be present in your thoughts instead of its demoralized opposite. This spiritualization of thought lets in the light, and brings the divine Mind, Life not death, into your consciousness." Science and Health, p. 407.

We must always bear in mind that it is wrong belief, not a physical disorder, that must be stamped out. Christian Science shows us how, inevitably bringing healing.
