FOR CHILDREN

Can a puppet talk?

Do you know what a ventriloquist is? A person who holds a doll or puppet and makes its head and mouth move—sometimes its arms and eyes. The puppet seems to speak. But it is made of wood or cloth or plastic, so the puppet can't really talk or move by itself. It's the ventriloquist who speaks, without even moving his lips, so you think it's the puppet who is talking. It's all a trick, but a person might be fooled into believing that the puppet really does speak.

This is just what is happening when your body tells you it has a pain or is feeling sick or can't move very well. Unless you're alert, you may be tricked into believing your body can "talk" and tell you how it feels.

The talker is what Mary Baker Eddy Mrs. Eddy is the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science . calls mortal mind. The body can't talk or feel, but mortal mind, like the ventriloquist, tries to trick you into believing it can.

Christian Science heals sniffles or pains by showing that mortal mind can't really talk for the body either. The only real talker is God, and He tells us we are His perfect children. "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness." Gen. 1:26

The truth is that as God's children we are spiritual, so all the health and power and intelligence we have come from Him. In fact, the Bible says, "In him we live, and move, and have our being." Acts 17:28.
