"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on...
"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee" (Isa. 26:3). These words were brought home very clearly to me while I was reading an article in an issue of the Sentinel, and they have been proved in my life many times.
After my husband passed on, I procured a greatly needed job with a firm I had worked for before my marriage. I was also advised to apply for a widow's pension, as I had my mother to care for. This I did, but my pension request was turned down because of a technicality. At first I was resentful and thought this unfair, since others in my position had received a pension. But on reflection I decided to put the whole business behind me. This was not easy to do. Wishing to see where my thinking was wrong, I gave the situation much deep prayer. Then I realized that even though my husband was no longer with me, God had always completely supported me, and He would continue to support me.
Many weeks passed. One evening when I arrived home from the Wednesday testimony meeting in my branch church, I was given a message to ring up a certain number. I did and someone my husband had known offered me an opportunity to take over the running of a little drapery shop. I said that I had never had that kind of experience, but the person was confident I could do it. After considerable prayer and study of Christian Science, I decided to accept the position. It necessitated giving up my job and moving to live over the shop away from all my friends, but I felt convinced that this was the right thing to do.
This proved to be so, and my financial needs were beautifully met. The lessons I learned and the many expressions of kindness from Christian Science practitioners and members of the branch church I was able to join helped me a good deal. I was able to take Christian Science class instruction, teach in the Sunday School, and do other duties.
More recently I witnessed another instance of God's care. Every Sunday afternoon it is my practice to prepare my books, the Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, for the next week's Bible Lesson found in the Christian Science Quarterly. I was doing this as usual one Sunday when I heard a fire alarm. I looked out of the window and saw a bush fire coming very close to two houses and the railway station. Immediately I denied the threat of destruction and declared God's complete control of the universe. Later, when I went to the station to go to church, the attendant spoke of the fire and said that it seemed like a miracle—the wind had turned right away; the fire missed the station, and only the fences were slightly burned. I was so grateful for this wonderful demonstration of our loving Father's protection of all.
One time when I felt a change in my life was needed, I prayed about it, and a new position and home opened up for me. I also found that I could attend a branch church much nearer to my home than before.
For numerous other healings that include those of burns, colds, and muscular pains, I am most grateful.
