A dear friend gave me a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy...
A dear friend gave me a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy about thirty years ago, just after my mother passed on. My friend saw that I was deeply grieved but also that I turned completely to my Bible for comfort. I was a member, at that time, of a Protestant church.
My friend said, "Please read this book. It will help you and your family. It will help you to understand the truths of the Bible and recognize God as divine Mind, Spirit, Life, Truth, Principle, Soul, and Love." I thanked her very much and, later that day, I started reading it.
As I read, I felt a reverent, spiritual feeling that I had never felt for any book except the Bible. I knew that there was something sacred and divine about this book. For six years I read Science and Health while still attending the Protestant church I belonged to. But it was my twelve-year-old daughter who was instrumental in guiding me to change my membership to the Church of Christ, Scientist.
One evening when I came home from work she said, "Mother, there is going to be a Christian Science lecture at the auditorium downtown tonight, and I think you should go." (She had heard about it at school.) So I did. Later, when I walked into the auditorium, a dear friend met me and said, "Now, you go into this lecture knowing that God is All and that there is nothing but God." I did, and by the end of the lecture I had made up my mind to attend a local Christian Science branch church. I went the following Sunday and have been attending ever since. That was in 1958.
When I decided to join this branch church about two months later, I thought, "What will I do when I feel that I need an aspirin?" (I was taking about five or six aspirins a day to help me get through work.) And also I thought, "What will I do if my sinus trouble flares up?" I had suffered with this problem for several years. Then immediately I thought, "I have nothing to fear—Christian Science will take care of both of these needs!" After that I just stopped taking the aspirins, and I never had any more sinus trouble. I have had numerous other healings since then.
About ten years after I joined the branch church, I was in need of a job. I looked for about a week but did not find one. Then one day I decided to move back to Birmingham, where I had worked previously for about fifteen years. I looked at the ads in the newspaper there and found one job that I was sure I could do. Soon I was hired for the job, and someone told me that I could rent a room, with kitchen privileges, just three blocks away.
I rented the room and was able to walk to and from my work. About two weeks after this my daughter joined me with her two small children. In a short time she accepted a very good job as a secretary in an attorney's office, where she worked for about eight years. During this time we relocated in a different town, sure that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494). I attended the branch church in Birmingham every Sunday and studied the Bible Lessons from the Christian Science Quarterly daily.
We were very low on money at one point, but all of our needs were supplied, and we prayed and practiced what we were learning in Science. In a few months we were able to buy a car, and in about a year we were able to buy a house. Since that time, I have continued to make a lot of progress in Christian Science.
Now, more than ever before, I am enjoying and understanding the Bible Lessons and reading the periodicals. I am very grateful for the fact that I started reading and studying Christian Science; it has taught me how to truly rely on God.
