I'm grateful for Christian Science because I know it's dynamic— it really heals.
In the midst of one especially active day at work I felt ill and decided to go home. While walking down the street I found it difficult to continue, so I stopped and leaned against a building for support. Then this sentence from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy came forcefully to mind (p. 14): "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints. If suffering from a belief in sickness, you will find yourself suddenly well." Our Leader's succinct statement brought a flood of spiritual inspiration. Quite naturally I recognized my real nature as the perfect, whole child of God—harmonious being, true not only for "a single moment" but for eternity. All the bodily complaints were silenced, and I went on my way rejoicing because I'd been instantaneously healed.
At another time my husband entered into a contract with a reputable company. We both felt this had been done in good faith. However, after a lapse of years, when it came time for them to honor the agreement, the firm claimed that we had misinterpreted the contract and that consequently they were not liable. This came as a shock to us, as there was a sizable amount of money due my husband. He and I discussed it up and down many times, and we both concluded that we could not bring a suit against the company, as this was contrary to our way of thinking and living.
The firm had a staff of astute lawyers, but we were led to rely solely on the teachings of Christian Science for a solution, trying diligently to live by the Golden Rule. From this scientific basis we appealed to the higher court of divine Spirit, where man's rights are fully established by Truth. We recognized that there is no provision for injustice under God's law; therefore man is incapable of knowing inequity. I can honestly say that at no time were we resentful of this company, nor did the monetary considerations overshadow our Christian love for the businessmen involved. Prayer was undertaken daily to resolve the problem.
After some six to eight months we received a letter that stated: "After reviewing all aspects of the situation, the decision has been made to honor the contract." It was the same contract, the same piece of paper; not one word had been changed. But the light of spiritual understanding had displaced the darkness of limited, mortal thinking and brought forth a reversal of the previous decision. The Bible assures us (Isa. 33:22), "The Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; he will save us." Divine law always supersedes human law. I love what Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 504): "The rays of infinite Truth, when gathered into the focus of ideas, bring light instantaneously, whereas a thousand years of human doctrines, hypotheses, and vague conjectures emit no such effulgence."
Christian Science has always been my way of life. As I've relied on God, He has never failed to heal, protect, and direct me. Membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, and Christian Science class instruction, have been waymarks in my spiritual education. I joined the church by my own choice, not because I was pushed into it. As Christ Jesus made demands on his disciples, so Christian Science makes healing demands on its students today, demands we can joyously fulfill.
