Nothing can stand in our way!
A couple of years ago our school held a sports day. Any sixth-grader could enter any two events. I had decided to do the high jump and the fiftyyard dash. When that day came, I went to practice at the gym with my friend who was also going to be in the high jump. But every time I jumped, I hit the bar and knocked it off. My friend and the one other girl who was also going to jump made it most of the time. I was getting very depressed and was glad when practice was over.
When the event got under way, I sat with the other two girls and watched the boys jump. I denied that limitation was real and could make me knock the bar down. But even when a boy jumped, he would knock the bar down most of the time.
Then I thought, "Am I going to let error have power and say I can't go over that bar? Does it have any power to? No! God is everywhere, and every effect belongs to Him. Since every effect belongs to God, it must be very good. His power is what's helping me go over that bar. He is showing that error doesn't have any power to hold me back." I thought of my favorite Bible verse: "I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well." Ps. 139:14;
"When I'm truly expressing God," I thought, "everything I do has to be a marvelous work." Also these words of Mrs. Eddy's from Science and Health helped: "Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man." Science and Health, p. 393. I went on thinking, "Error is nothing. It can't stand in the way of God's showing His love to me. How can nothing stand against something?"
I kept this in mind all the time I jumped. Not once did I knock the bar off, and I came in first. I also placed first in the fifty-yard dash. That sports day showed me in a small way that man is unlimited because he reflects God. When we really understand this, nothing can stand in the way of whatever is right for us to do. And with these ideas, we can do a lot more than jump over bars!
