Who's in control?

Do you ever feel like a helpless onlooker? In personal relationships, business situations, or world affairs we may be tempted to regard ourselves as the victims of circumstance, unable to govern our lives. What can we do?

We can acknowledge God's omnipotence. Christian Science attributes all power to God, Principle, and acknowledges the powerlessness of evil as proved by Christ Jesus. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health: "There is no power apart from God. Omnipotence has all-power, and to acknowledge any other power is to dishonor God. The humble Nazarene overthrew the supposition that sin, sickness, and death have power. He proved them powerless." Science and Health, p. 228;

Accepting the omnipotence and omnipresence of God's government allows us to see this control as effectively operating in our lives. No situation is outside the control of God's all-embracing care. Calamity and disaster have no part in God's universe.

Since God, Mind, is the only power, He governs every situation harmoniously, and there is nothing beyond His supreme control. Mrs. Eddy states, "Infinite Mind creates and governs all, from the mental molecule to infinity." ibid., p. 507; What, then, can possibly exist beyond the range of God's control? Absolutely nothing!

Arguments of physical laws and limitations are totally powerless against the omnipotent law of God, and this is a practical truth. Jesus worked many miracles in proving the superiority of spiritual law over material laws. He walked on the water, fed the multitudes, and raised the dead.

Others in the Bible also proved the inability of material laws to oppose the spiritual law. Elijah rendered death null and void when he resuscitated a widow's son. Later, in the face of the laws of chemistry, he called on God to restore His people's faith by setting ablaze the water-drenched altar. "Then the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench." I Kings 18:38; And Elisha appealed to a law beyond the law of gravity when he caused the borrowed ax head to float.

A story in the book of Daniel illustrates how the lie of bestiality and animality can be refuted. When the king went to the lions' den and inquired about Daniel's safety, Daniel replied: "O king, live for ever. My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt." Dan. 6:21, 22; Daniel recognized that the spirituality of his motives and the purity of his thought had been his source of protection. Had his thought become clouded with doubt or apprehension, he could not have perceived the presence of God.

Mrs. Eddy perceived the importance of mental purity and spirituality in allowing God's law to operate in one's experience. She says of the cleansing from sin that comes with spiritual baptism, "By purifying human thought, this state of mind permeates with increased harmony all the minutiae of human affairs." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 204; Every event of our lives down to the smallest detail will be harmonized as we continue to bring "into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ." II Cor. 10:5.

What a release it is to give up the limiting feelings of uselessness and helplessness and to replace these with an awareness of God's ever-present guidance and care! We never have to feel that a situation is out of control simply because we cannot do anything physically to correct it. The admission of God's allness and power relieves us of a false sense of responsibility. By mentally shutting out fear or frustration and aligning our thoughts more closely to the spiritual source of all cause and effect, we yield to His power and see it operate effectively in our lives.
