Inspired by the anticipation that my experience might be of...

Inspired by the anticipation that my experience might be of benefit to others, I give this testimony, with reverence to God and gratitude for Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, and for Mary Baker Eddy, without whose immortal discovery, Christian Science, I should not have been what I am now.

Over eleven years ago I was taken as a patient to one of Manila's hospitals. Following a thorough diagnosis and clinical test, I was told that I was suffering from a malignant growth in my throat. I became very fearful and was not able to stand, walk, or to do all the things I would normally do. Since there was no help, I became reluctant to take anything material that the doctors prescribed. The case was pronounced incurable.

Late one evening when everyone else in the ward was asleep, I knelt in silent prayer to God, pleading for His mercy and kindness—that I might be led out of the horrible pit in which I found myself, for the sake of my two innocent children. The elder child was then four, and the younger one three. On the following day I was visited by one of my first cousins, who asked me if I would submit to Christian Science treatment. He had heard that Christian Science had healed many sick folk in our locality. In a flash I felt as though someone held me by the arm and lifted my thoughts. I was able to get up and bade my cousin take me, with my wife, to the place where a group of Christian Scientists had begun to hold services.

I was met by a woman who had been healed of an internal cancer through Christian Science. The experience of the woman gave me much inspiration, conviction, and insight—with all the hopes to be healed—because we had identical cases. Minutes later a middle-aged woman came in, unexpectedly, and was introduced to me as a Christian Science practitioner. As she talked to me, the healing started with the injunction of Christ Jesus (Mark 5:36), "Be not afraid."I was led to understand that God is not the author of sickness. With strength of spiritual conviction she assured me that an understanding of God in Christian Science could heal me. I was helped to understand that sickness is a thing of thought externalized on the body; so that if the fear of the disease, or thought of it, is destroyed, the disease will disappear as sunshine will disperse a mist. Further, I was convinced that "all things are possible to God." The opening sentence of the chapter "Prayer" in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy, I was to learn, includes these words (p. 1): "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." At this juncture I rested my thought with absolute expectancy. All of a sudden I felt release from the dread of the disease.

A copy of Science and Health was given me, and a Bible, King James Version, to read and study more. Opening the book, Science and Health, to the first page of the Preface I read (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." I held fast to this very first promise in Science and Health and was able to lean upon God's help all the way through. I gave up all reliance on medicine.

I went home overwhelmed with joy, and I felt completely healed. My gladness, which knew no bounds, was coupled with a strong desire to study Christian Science and to follow Christ to the end of serving humanity. I pray not to forget my duty to God, and my duty as a member of The Mother Church. Through the provision of the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy, I have been blessed with Christian Science class instruction. For all of this I shall not cease to reiterate my immense gratitude to Almighty God, in whose love I found the answer to my prayer.

One day I was riding on the back of my mother's bicycle, and I got my foot caught in the wheel. Seven spokes were broken in the wheel. My ankle was twisted badly and it hurt a lot. My dad came out to see what had happened. Then he took me inside and put me on the couch. We started knowing the truth, praying, real hard. We knew that God's child can never be hurt.

We put a bandage on my ankle. That night I took the bandage off because I didn't want it. I saw just a little mark. Later that night I called Mommy and said, "Look, Mom, I can walk!" Then my dad came up and saw that I was healed. I will never forget the healing. I am very grateful for Christian Science. It helps me a lot of times.

This was a quick and permanent healing, and I would like to tell more about it. Someone came to help my wife free Betsy's foot from the spokes.

From the looks of her ankle we thought it might be broken. It was badly cut and bruised. Betsy was crying hard when I took her into the house, but both her mother and I began to pray out loud immediately. We had to meet our own fear quickly. It was wonderful how soon Betsy settled down and responded to the love of the whole family. We continued to voice some statements from the Bible, and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.

One of the first things we told her was something she was very familiar with (Ps. 91:11, 12): "For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone."

My wife and I worked with other statements, including, "Under divine Providence there can be no accidents, since there is no room for imperfection in perfection" (Science and Health, p. 424). This helped destroy any sense of condemnation and blame, since all is under divine Providence. I held to the thought that harmony cannot be broken, despite the appearance of something broken in her ankle.

All three of us felt the love of God with us in this time of need. It was all around—and the most wonderful joy, expectancy, peace, light. It gave us an absolute conviction of healing.

We put Betsy in bed and put a bandage and sock on her foot. About supper time she was up again and took the sock and bandage off. By that time there were only a few small scratches left. Her mother came to her and helped her walk across the bedroom. Betsy then called me upstairs and walked to me on both feet. She was very grateful, and her little face was full of joy about the whole thing. She could tell the healing was taking place.

It was the next day that she was hopping around freely. And by the third day she was jumping up and down without any pain or incapacity at all. All of us were thrilled to see her healing, and we often refer to it. It was quick, permanent, and there are no marks at all on her ankle to show that anything hurtful happened. We cannot tell which ankle it was that was injured.
