Responding to God's Law of Perpetual Good

Established beliefs, or laws, pertaining to heredity, weather, food, environment, and so on—these are supposed to determine to a large extent the state of our health and well-being. But one who refuses to give validity to man-made laws and recognizes that he is completely governed by God's law of good, of health and harmony, cannot be affected by them. Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered and founded Christian Science, writes, "Every law of matter or the body, supposed to govern man, is rendered null and void by the law of Life, God." Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, pp. 380-381;

A student of Christian Science who was suffering from a painful foot ailment placed his complete reliance on this religion for healing. There was fear to be overcome, for his work required much walking and other activity.

When his own metaphysical treatment did not result in healing, he requested the aid of a Christian Science practitioner. The practitioner called his attention to a passage in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy that reads, "Let us banish sickness as an outlaw, and abide by the rule of perpetual harmony,—God's law." ibid., p. 381;

The practitioner and patient recognized that since the discord was an outlaw—unsupported by God's law of good—it was unreal and powerless, having no cause and no divine authority to interfere with normal activity. They both resolved to banish it from thought. They affirmed and reaffirmed the purity, perfection, and completeness of man's selfhood and acknowledged his unity with God, divine Principle, Love. In a short time the Scientist was completely healed.

We find that Christ Jesus gave no heed to material health laws in his ministry. Through his clear comprehension of the changeless perfection of man's being as the likeness of God, he healed diseases of all kinds, including supposedly incurable ones. To a woman who had been severely crippled for eighteen years Jesus said, "Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity," Luke 13:12; and she was healed immediately.

Material sense would have us believe there is a law of heredity that has the power to affect us adversely. We may believe we have inherited erroneous traits, idiosyncrasies, or a tendency to suffer from certain diseases. Since God, divine Principle, is our Father-Mother —our only real, eternal relative—we can inherit or reflect only that which is pure and good.

The realization that God's law is wholly beneficial, and is governing all continually and impartially, nullifies the belief that one can be affected by the so-called law of heredity. Since discords are not caused by God, Truth and Love, the only creator, they are unreal, baseless, and causeless; they are not part of man's true, spiritual identity. The Bible tells us, "Beloved, now are we the sons of God." I John 3:2;

God's law establishes the right place and right activity for every individual. Man is continually employed by God to reflect His attributes. Knowing this, one who is seeking employment can wisely refrain from yielding to frustration or discouragement. The recognition that God's law of perpetual good is in control of us and of our affairs makes us receptive of productive, uplifting ideas from divine Mind. These ideas, utilized, provide suitable employment. The Bible says: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Prov. 3:5,6;

We may be tempted to believe that inclement weather, extremes of heat or cold, or other atmospheric conditions can cause us to suffer. In reality, there is only one atmosphere, that of Spirit, Soul, which is completely harmonious. It includes nothing that can harm or cause discomfort. Man, God's idea, lives in this perfect, spiritual atmosphere. We can know that God's law of perpetual good is with us, governing us wherever we are, that it supports us in right activity and protects us from all inharmony, including adverse weather conditions. The acknowledgment that the universe is under the control of God, divine Mind, helps prevent extreme weather conditions.

Increased spiritual understanding, won through daily study and use of Christian Science, makes us responsive to God's law of perpetual good. Thus we are equipped to meet any problem with calm and the assurance of a right solution. Mrs. Eddy writes, "God is All, and by virtue of this nature and allness He is cognizant only of good." Farther on our Leader continues: "Mortals have only to submit to the law of God, come into sympathy with it, and to let His will be done. This unbroken motion of the law of divine Love gives, to the weary and heavy-laden, rest." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 208.
