Without personal origin or possession...

All Good Is from God

If someone suggests that a person is intelligent and lovely, do we agree? On the surface it would appear that we should if the evidence supports such a judgment. But this could lead to a serious mistake.

We may ask, Is it a mistake to recognize beauty and intelligence in others? No! The error lies not in recognizing these qualities but in assuming them to be personally originated and possessed. All real qualities are spiritual, reflecting the nature of God. Man is God's image, expressing His qualities and not personally originated characteristics. The Bible informs us that Christ Jesus was once addressed as "good Master" and that he rebuked the speaker, saying, "Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God." Matt. 19:17;

The concept of man as a creator and a personal possessor of good, limits, cheats, causes envy and hate; it prevents a realization that every individual is the complete expression of the one infinite Mind, God. A personal sense of beauty or goodness cannot possibly envision the infinite range of beauty that is inherent in every idea of God.

Too often intelligence has been limited by our supposing it to originate in a material brain, rather than recognizing it as the manifestation of the one Mind, the source of all wisdom, the infinite source of infinite ideas. The error of attributing intelligence to education or personal ability prevents one from reaching out for a fuller expression of infinite Mind, something we all are capable of doing. Man expresses God's qualities as a result of divine law. As we see this, our estimation of mankind's worth and grandeur improves, and leads to a demand for a fuller expression of these qualities in everyday life.

Some time ago I was called to a distant city to help solve an urgent computer problem. I had had little practical experience with the machine that failed, and when I arrived, I found there were actually two problems at different places. I was told we had one day left to correct the trouble, and that others had tried in vain for many days to come up with a solution.

We had a small team of several men, and to work on both troubles at once, we split up into two groups. Praying about the situation, I realized that we all reflected the divine intelligence that had been expressed in building the machine in the first place. I knew I had all of Mind's infinite intelligence available to me, because it was available to all as reflections of Mind. Soon I discovered a subtle inconsistency that revealed the cause of the problem. Happy over this success, we offered our help to the other team but were told their problem had just been solved too. Infinite intelligence is available to all, and in fact it is the only intelligence anyone can possibly have.

A limited, personal sense of others is a liar. It ascribes to people evil qualities as well as good. Christian Science shows us that no quality is ever personally originated, and since evil is not a quality of God, it cannot be expressed in man. We need to strip any evil tendency away from our conception of man. Evil is never more than the impersonal manifestation of an erroneous concept. It is a void without substance or consequence.

God's qualities are expressed in man; they are all represented in every one of us. Look for them—they are there. Man is a complete expression of God. But in their manifestation these qualities differ from one individual to another.

One day, while listening to an orchestra, I noticed a correlation in the part played by each musician to the individual expression of divine qualities. The members played various instruments, but they were all making music, all playing the same composition, although individual in their expression. Every player followed the harmony, style, and rhythm that the composer had set down. The result was the rich flow of music expressing the full grandeur of the composer's thought.

So individual men and women, expressing all of God's qualities in infinite variety, contribute to the full measure of God's indescribable glory.

Even as the various instruments of an orchestra add richness to sound, so the infinitude of all the individual expressions of God's qualities expresses the beauty and depth of His infinite nature. Yet not a single individual expression of God is lost in this infinitude. Quite the contrary, each individual is supremely valuable. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health, "Man is not absorbed in Deity, and man cannot lose his individuality, for he reflects eternal Life; nor is he an isolated, solitary idea, for he represents infinite Mind, the sum of all substance." Science and Health, p. 259.

Health can be maintained and restored by a perception of the infinite nature of all good. Health represents wholeness and completeness. To the degree we understand that man unconditionally reflects the full range of Mind's qualities, we experience health. Health is not a personal possession, subject to deterioration or loss; it is man's divine right, an indestructible, eternal quality of God. It may seem that certain persons completely lack divine qualities, but this is only a false, surface appearance. Prayer that focuses on the completeness of man as God's image restores one's expression of whatever good may seem lacking.

Christian Science reveals reality, and through Science everyone may find life full and lovely, grander than the grandest symphony ever composed.
