I have been a Christian Scientist all my life and am very grateful...
I have been a Christian Scientist all my life and am very grateful for the health and happiness this divine Science brings to those who study and practice it.
About fifteen years ago I had a healing of an illness that had been bothering me for many months. As long as there was no pain and it was not too noticeable, I gave the condition little attention. But as a growth in my stomach became larger and began to attract attention, I had to pray earnestly. At this time I was very unhappy over a personal situation which affected the joy I had always had at work.
I contacted a Christian Science practitioner who later became my teacher, and she began prayerful treatment. During this period I gave a great deal of time to study and looked up all the references on the subject of harmony in the Concordances to the Bible and Mary Baker Eddy's writings. Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy was always close by, and I picked it up often. Some helpful statements were (p. 261), "Look away from the body into Truth and Love, the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and immortality"; and (p. 408), "Every sort of sickness is error,—that is, sickness is loss of harmony"; and (p. 407), "Let the perfect model be present in your thoughts instead of its demoralized opposite." I also enjoyed reading the hymns in the Christian Science Hymnal—especially No. 144. The first verse reads:
In atmosphere of Love divine,
We live, and move, and breathe;
Though mortal eyes may see it not,
'Tis sense that would deceive.
It was becoming very difficult for me at work. I became very conscious of my appearance and felt sure others were, also. The thought came to me to watch my thoughts instead of my condition. As time went on I realized I had to deal with fear. Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 368), "When fear disappears, the foundation of disease is gone." Also I read and reread "the scientific statement of being" in Science and Health, page 468.
One day I was talking to the practitioner on the phone, and she asked me if I was ready to accept my healing. I had been so wrapped up in praying for more harmony and happiness in my life that I did not realize I was healed. The growth had disappeared. It had not been necessary for me to take off any time from my work. I would like to add that I was employed by a large school system, and when I had another physical problem about five years ago, which was completely healed in Christian Science also, it was necessary to have a physical examination before I returned to work. The area where the enlargement in my stomach had been earlier was checked, and I was told by the examining doctor there were no signs of a disease. The doctor knew nothing of my former illness, and I said nothing. Silently I thanked God.
It is impossible to express my gratitude to God for Christian Science, for Christ Jesus, the great Master, and for Mrs. Eddy. Class instruction, with the yearly association meetings given by a very dedicated and loving teacher, is a continuing source of spiritual enlightenment. I am grateful for the many practitioners who devote so much time and love to this beautiful religion.
