Can We Heal the Sick?

Centuries ago the greatest healer who ever lived, Christ Jesus, told his followers to go into the world and "heal the sick." Luke 10:9; And with Mrs. Eddy's discovery of Christian Science over a hundred years ago, mankind was given further practical proof that Christianity and healing are inseparable. There is no longer reason to doubt that, even today, metaphysical healing can bring out the full power and potential of Christianity.

How does one become a Christian healer? Jesus claimed no healing power of his own. He made it quite clear he could do nothing of himself: "The Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works." John 14:10;

The Master proved the power of love in his healing work. Love was the vital quality in his words, in his life itself. It was his ability to love, to perceive the perfect man of God's creating, that enabled him to restore the sick and sinning. "God is love," I John 4:8; the Bible states. Jesus knew he could never, for an instant, be separated from God, Love, and that neither could those who required healing. "Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man," Mrs. Eddy writes, "who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick." Science and Health, pp. 476-477;

We reflect divine healing ability in proportion as we are governed by God, divine Love. Becoming a healer does not require intellectual skills or many years of experience as a Scientist. But it does require compassion, a desire to comfort and uplift the broken in spirit. And, most importantly, it requires genuine spirituality, an understanding of the man God created. Only through spiritual insight can one be a window for the Love which is God and thereby heal the sick as Jesus did.

Mrs. Eddy's remarkable healing work was the result of a deep-rooted spirituality. She reflected the healing warmth of divine Love so completely that those who came to her for restoration found the discord and disease in their thought and experience eliminated.

To attain spirituality, even in a small degree, requires that we constantly, conscientiously practice expressing the immortal qualities inherent in our true being as the perfect reflection of divine Spirit. The Bible and Mrs. Eddy's works contain countless examples of the qualities so necessary for the successful practice of Christian healing.

Spirituality is a state of consciousness that reflects God, Spirit, evidenced in a more Christly approach to daily living—in our thinking less of material stresses and pleasures and more of prayerful communion with God. When we pray, our spiritual vision is sharpened, our understanding and discernment deepened.

The practice of genuine Christ-healing grows as the healer expresses the Christian qualities of selflessness, meekness, gentleness, compassion, purity, loving-kindness. To become a consistent healer requires consistent study, quiet, and prayer. A material sense of life and intelligence must be replaced by the spiritual facts of being. In proportion as this is done, the healer recognizes that what really needs correcting is not a mortal, physical body but a mistaken sense of life and substance separate from God.

Animal magnetism, or evil, might whisper to the fledgling healer, "This case is too difficult—you don't know enough." But God, divine Love, the only Mind, is always the healer, and the practitioner need not harbor a false sense of responsibility. "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need," ibid., p. 494. Mrs. Eddy tells us.

Christ Jesus stressed to those seeking healing the importance of mastering fear. He knew that whoever trusts God, divine Love, has no need to fear. God never fails. There is no problem too big or too small for Him. The healer learns this as he gains mastery over fear in himself and in his patients.

Can we heal the sick? Christian Science answers, Yes! It answers with the full potential and power of Christianity. Anyone who sincerely studies and practices this religion can learn to heal.

The same Christ, the divine nature that Jesus manifested, is here today. And with the healing Christ comes not only physical regeneration but moral and spiritual renewal as well.
