What Is a Healing?

If we define matter metaphysically as the object of thought, we might say that a healing occurs when an improved thought turns inflamed, painful, disordered matter into healthy matter. But a change that occurs as the result of Christian Science treatment demonstrates that matter is incapable of sensation, sickness, or health.

Christ, the true idea of God, reveals God as Spirit and man as God's spiritual reflection. This true idea is an ever-present influence in human consciousness, correcting whatever is believed that is not true. Christ Jesus demonstrated through his healing works, and finally through his own resurrection and ascension, that life and intelligence, truth and substance, are not in a material body and that matter itself is a phenomenon of human thought. He proved further that all mental phenomena are governed in fact by God, Spirit, which is the only true Mind. When human thought yields to the Christ-idea, the conditions of matter yield to the conditions of Spirit, as shadow yields to light.

When someone who is ill seeks healing in Christian Science, he is seeking the truth of God and man. This is what Christian Science has to offer. One seeking only to have an unhappy material condition replaced by a happy one is bound to be disappointed. Nevertheless, healing often comes to one who thinks he wants only physical relief, because his turning to Christian Science in itself reveals a deep-down loss of faith in matter and some awakening to the Christ. And when healing does not come, the disappointment sometimes shocks the individual into facing squarely the worthlessness of the material conditions he is depending upon. Then he consciously turns toward Spirit and is healed.
