My first testimony was published in The Christian Science Journal...
My first testimony was published in The Christian Science Journal of April, 1931. I wish again to express gratitude to God for the many blessings that have come to me during more than forty years.
In 1928, after undergoing surgery three times, I was still suffering from physical trouble. I turned to Christian Science for help and was healed. From that time I have depended entirely on this Science and we have had many healings in our family. Sometimes these came through my own prayers and study; many times they resulted from calling on a Christian Science practitioner.
During the economic depression of the thirties, my husband's business, a wholesale grocery, was lost, and a nice home had to be given up. Several hundred acres of land which he owned were mortgaged to cover the indebtedness. We had help from a practitioner during this time, and many blessings came about as the Bible began to come alive through the light of understanding from the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. The holder of the mortgage allowed my husband to cut timber from the land, thus paying off the mortgage. The land was redeemed, and from that time my family and I have had an income from land leases, sales, and other benefits.
We then moved to a city where there was a Church of Christ, Scientist, and I could participate in the many church activities, including serving as Reading Room librarian and a term as First Reader. During this time I had the very wonderful experience of class instruction from a consecrated teacher.
At one time my husband suffered a heart attack during the night and asked me to call a practitioner. No material remedies were asked for or given. I read to him from the Bible and the textbook for over an hour, while the practitioner prayed for us. He then retired, slept well, arose the next morning, and soon was as active as usual.
About four years ago I was faced with a serious illness. No medical diagnosis was ever made, but when I realized that I could not cope with it without help, I telephoned my two children in other cities, telling them that there was a physical condition and that I wished to heal it in Christian Science. I assured them that a Christian Science friend would come and stay with me to do what was necessary. I asked a practitioner for treatment, and my friend stayed with me nearly a week. Church friends were also very kind. I was soon completely free. During the course of this experience I had the privilege of spending nearly three weeks in the Christian Science Benevolent Association on Pacific Coast.
I am so grateful for Mrs. Eddy's work in establishing the Christian Science movement, which is blessing mankind. Throughout some forty-five years I've been able to subscribe to the Christian Science periodicals and to share them with friends and neighbors. The study of Science and Health certainly illumines the Bible and gives a clearer understanding of God as the one Mind governing the entire universe, and of Christ Jesus as the beloved Son of God. I am so grateful for Christian Science.
