In the spring of 1935, I was told by a doctor that I had a growth...
In the spring of 1935, I was told by a doctor that I had a growth that must be removed immediately. Arrangements were made for me to enter a hospital. The Wednesday evening before the operation, while out walking, I passed a Church of Christ, Scientist. I remembered that a friend had told me many years earlier, "If ever you are in need of healing, look up a Christian Science church." I went in. Testimonies were being given.
Very soon a woman behind me gave a testimony of the healing of a growth. She was hardly seated before I was beside her, asking where a Christian Science practitioner could be found. Smiling, she asked me to wait until the meeting was over, and then she'd find one who lived near me. This she did, introducing me to a practitioner who lived on the same street.
The next day I went to see the practitioner. After talking for over an hour, she asked me to go to the Christian Science Reading Room and borrow a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I stopped and bought the book on my way home. That day I asked the practitioner point-blank if the hemorrhaging would stop provided I did everything she had asked me to do in placing my full reliance in God. Looking me in the eye, she answered, "Yes." I shall always be grateful for her great faith in God and her direct answer, because never from that day until this has there been another hemorrhage!
I read through Science and Health three times, and then began daily study of the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly.
In August it seemed necessary to travel to California. As I had been told in April by the doctor not to ride in a car, I felt it advisable to talk again with the practitioner, who assured me that whatever was necessary for me to do I could do with confidence in God. Then, with confidence, my daughter and I left for California by bus, riding straight through in six days. No ill effects resulted. The healing of the growth was permanent.
On arrival, an apartment was easily found. Next day, Sunday, my daughter and I attended a service at the nearest branch Church of Christ, Scientist. Monday morning I applied at three different stores for a position. All were willing to hire me. This was in 1935, when work throughout the United States was not plentiful. For seven years I was employed there, putting my daughter through high school and college.
During the last thirty-nine years Christian Science has been my only physician. Many times after I had called a practitioner for prayerful help, the healing came before the phone was hung up. Through Christian Science I have health and much happiness, and I'm most grateful.
For Christ Jesus who said, "Seek, and ye shall find" (Matt. 7:7), for Mrs. Eddy who gave us the truth, "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494), and for the practitioners who pray that we may know that we are God's perfect reflection, I am grateful.
