For many years I was a member of an orthodox church, but its teachings failed to satisfy me. I was reaching out for a religion more in line with the teachings of Jesus, and my prayers were answered when I went to the public library and picked up a book, apparently at random. The book I picked up was Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I took it home and read it right through, and then knew that what I had been looking for was here indeed.
I had never before heard of Christian Science and did not know whether there was a church in the district, but it was as though God guided me to it. The caretaker there directed me to the Reading Room. The attendant in the Reading Room talked to me lovingly about Christian Science, and I started to attend the church services and to study the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly. I am now a member of that branch Church of Christ, Scientist.
I shall always be grateful to the practitioner who helped me to understand more of this wonderful teaching. My life had been filled with many fears. The illumination of the Bible and the teaching of God's dear love and healing laws removed my fears. I told the practitioner I had suffered from constipation all my life. But she made it clear that this was a false belief that matter governed me instead of Mind, God. I felt free immediately to throw away all my medicine and have not taken any since, and am well.
Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health (p. 114), "Christian Science explains all cause and effect as mental, not physical."
Another healing for which I am most grateful is that of the need to wear spectacles. This came about in an unusual way. On arriving home from a Wednesday testimony meeting I saw an orange which had turned white on the outside. Because of this I thought that it was bad. But on peeling it I found it fresh and sound. I needed only to discard the peel, to find it good. This alerted my thought to peel away the false belief that I needed spectacles, and I knew there and then that my sight was perfect, since man's faculties are spiritual. I have not worn spectacles since.
I am very grateful for the truth that helped me discern the spiritual reality that brought about this instantaneous healing, and for the understanding that it is nothing but false belief that seems to separate us from God, our creator. When we really seek Him, we find for ourselves a haven of rest and a sure foundation—joy and peace that words fail to describe. We are enabled to live this peace and joy as we follow the teachings of Christ Jesus.
