Christian Science came into my experience fifty-one years ago...
Christian Science came into my experience fifty-one years ago when a friend invited me to attend a Wednesday evening testimony meeting. I began to read the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and realized at once that this was for me.
I have always been grateful that my parents, who were active members of the Presbyterian Church, taught me from childhood to know and love the Bible. However, it was not until I began to understand something of Christian Science that I realized the importance of comprehending the spiritual meaning of the Bible passages. I had thought that there should be healing through prayer as Jesus healed. So it was with joy that I read the following words at the beginning of the first chapter of Science and Health (p. 1): "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." Here was a book that could teach one to heal through prayer as Jesus healed!
To me, an outstanding healing occurred early in my study of Science. I awakened one morning very ill with influenza. Living alone and without access to a telephone, I became very fearful. Then I decided that this was an opportunity to put into practice what I had been learning. So I turned to God in prayer. As my thought became calmer, the following passage from the textbook came to thought (pp. 380, 381): "Every law of matter or the body, supposed to govern man, is rendered null and void by the law of Life, God."
As I pondered this passage showing the difference between erring mortal belief and God's law, I suddenly recollected Paul's words to the Romans (8:2): "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death."
Healing came quickly, for within an hour I was able to get up and spend the rest of the day normally.
This experience has always been an inspiration to me, for I learned that angel messages come when we turn unreservedly to God, Truth, in time of need.
In Proverbs we read (3:5, 6): "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Throughout my career in the field of education I have been guided to find satisfying and spiritually rewarding work. In a wonderful way, at different times, the right home has been provided.
Christian Science enables its students to prove that divine Love supplies all their needs. At one time a large quantity of steel was required for the building of a college at which I was employed. Since steel was at that time in very short supply nationally, permits were required. It was obvious that there would be serious delay in building if supplies were not obtained. Consequently, I sought the answer through prayer. I saw that, as we read in Psalms (24:1), "The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof." From this I reasoned that supply is governed by Mind and there could be no shortage of anything we needed. As a result of holding to these facts, the necessary permit was granted without delay, and adequate quantities of steel were supplied.
At another time an important appointment had to be made. There was one outstanding individual, eminently suitable for the post. It seemed, however, that she was unlikely to accept the appointment if offered. I turned from thought of one person to God's intelligent government. During the few hours before the decision had to be made, I held to the Bible statement (I Chron. 28:21): "There shall be with thee for all manner of workmanship every willing skilful man, for any manner of service." The highly qualified person was offered the post, and she accepted it.
Through the study and application of this divine Science I have been sustained under difficulties, protected from accidents, and healed whenever there has been need of healing. For all these and many other blessings, I am sincerely grateful to God. Membership in The Mother Church and in various branch Churches of Christ, Scientist, at different times, as well as the opportunities to serve in many capacities, have all contributed to growth in understanding.
For the practitioners who have helped me at times, for Mrs. Eddy's unselfed service to all mankind, and for Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, I am deeply grateful.
