As far back as I can remember, Christian Science has been the...
As far back as I can remember, Christian Science has been the way of Life in our home. My parents were always active in church work.
In my first year of school I was suddenly completely paralyzed. I am told my parents and brother took turns reading from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy to me. They did this day and night for about a week without any change in my condition, till one morning when I was left alone, I heard a voice, as plainly as though there were a person in the room, telling me to get up and walk. I did just that, and in another week I was back in school.
Then in high school I had a fall, but gave it no thought at the time. In a day or so I had difficulty in walking and severe pain in my hip and one leg. A Christian Science practitioner had been asked to give me treatment through prayer. After a week, since there was no apparent improvement, it seemed wise to call a medical doctor for a diagnosis. (At this time I could not walk at all.) The physician said I had injured a nerve. He wanted to operate immediately, expressing fear that I might never walk again. We thanked him and said we would rely on God for the healing. I learned the value of daily study of the Bible Lessons in the Christian Science Quarterly. With this effort on my part, and with the consecrated work of the practitioner, I was soon completely healed. These two healings are mileposts of radical reliance on Truth, which served as a foundation to build on. It was natural for me to join The Mother Church and a branch church and go through class early in my twenties.
In my own family there have been many outstanding proofs of divine care. A serious infection was healed by holding to the statement from Science and Health (p. 463), "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive." On two occasions broken bones have been set and healed by mental surgery alone. The disfiguring effect of an automobile accident was completely healed through prayer. I offer these healings that others may realize that God is the great Physician.
I am grateful for a happy marriage and the joy of having our children be regular pupils in a Christian Science Sunday School.
