My love and gratitude for Christian Science and for what it...

My love and gratitude for Christian Science and for what it has done for me and my family, and also my appreciation of the support and encouragement of the testimonies in the periodicals for many years, impel me to submit this testimony.

Christian Science was presented to me at a time when my husband and I were searching for help for our little daughter, who had been suffering for over a year with a very painful condition hi her leg and hip joint. We had taken her to several doctors and to a clinic for treatment, but they could not find any way to help her and so recommended sending her to a hospital for further tests and treatment. This we felt we could not do at that time.

Soon after hearing about Christian Science we had prayerful treatment for her from a Christian Science practitioner, and I started to study the textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy. In less than one week our daughter was healed of this problem, and in a short time her leg resumed its normal shape. What joy and gratitude we felt to see her running around free and happy!

This healing has been permanent, and during her school years she excelled in athletics. This healing has been a beacon to me over the years, and as a result Christian Science became a way of life for me. There have been many other healings, too—those of bad burns, abscesses and blood poisoning, and an organic malfunction.

Healing of sorrow came to me recently from more study and from learning more of eternal Life, God, and the deathless reality of God's infinite creation. In the Bible we read (II Cor. 1:3), "Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort." This has brought much comfort and peace.

The proof of God's protecting presence was made more evident to me lately. I was traveling in a car with other members of our family. We were traveling fast because of a lunch hour schedule, when a car stopped suddenly right in front of us. We did not hit it, but the force of the stop threw me up against the dashboard, then back, and then onto the floor. There was extreme pain in my arm and leg, and great concern was voiced for me by the others, who were shaken up by the sudden stop but not injured in any way. Quickly I refuted these fears with silent declarations of truth that were pouring into my thought. I knew that the law of God is equal to every emergency, and that because God is always caring for His beloved creation, the harmony and perfection of man can never be disrupted. The statement in Science and Health (p. 521) "The harmony and immortality of man are intact" was realized and accepted. I assured the others that I was unhurt and urged them to be grateful that no one in the car was injured. That ended all fears and comments about accidents. I felt no more pain, and we proceeded on to our luncheon and had a pleasant afternoon. There were no marks or aftereffects for any of us.

I cherish my membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church and appreciate the activities of each. I am grateful for the healing example of Christ Jesus and for Mrs. Eddy, for class instruction from a devoted teacher, and for all the good the world and mankind have received from this blessed truth.

Christian Science was introduced to our family about 1903. The first healing in our family was that of a sister who had suffered long because of a serious stomach disorder. Her doctor had kindly advised her to have an operation, but much fear impelled her to refuse this. She learned of Christian Science through her employer and requested a Christian Science practitioner for help through prayer. Her healing in Science was permanent, although her physician said that this cure would last but several months. Thereafter she conducted an active business of her own for over fifty years. Her testimony of this healing appeared in the October 5, 1907, issue of the Sentinel.

My sister's healing and her continued progress in Science eventually led other members of our family to become students of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy; and three of us became members of The Mother Church in Boston,

For over forty years Christian Science has been my only physician. During this time I have had healing and protection either through my own study or with the help of practitioners. I have experienced healings of a sprained ankle, infection, injuries after falling on the ice, and an instantaneous healing of a sudden and severe attack of influenza.

An outstanding experience for me, because of the transformation of my thinking, was the healing of warts on my hands. At this time I was assistant instructor of piano in a private school, and I felt resentful because I had been assigned the less talented pupils. One pupil's hands were covered with warts, and each day I dreaded seeing her enter the studio. At first I did nothing to see beyond the ugly evidence of this pupil's problem, and before long warts appeared on my own hands.

One evening, while home on vacation, I discussed this condition with my sister, who was a student of Christian Science. She gently directed my thinking away from growth in matter and to Mrs. Eddy's statement in Science and Health: "What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds" (p. 4). I saw that my real need was to fulfill the right desire for spiritual growth and to overcome the resentment toward my situation. I prayed sincerely for more patience and love. The next morning all evidence of the warts had disappeared and my hands were entirely smooth again.

One day, while I was busy at work in an office, I became very ill with all the symptoms of influenza. At first I was too ill and weak to get to a telephone to call for prayerful help, but after reaching a practitioner, and as soon as our conversation ended, I was completely free, felt well and strong again, and finished the day's work with perfect ease and well-being.

While I was in government service, traveling to various countries, Christian Science brought me wonderful protection. During several ocean voyages extremely rough weather was encountered, and most of the passengers became ill and were confined to their cabins. On one Atlantic crossing trouble with the ship's engines developed, and soon thereafter our vessel ran into quite a storm. During the night the Captain changed the ship's course six or seven times and sailed three hundred and sixty miles south trying to get away from the storm. An unusually large wave struck the ship, smashing radar equipment. During this ordeal I was completely free from threatening seasickness by holding clearly in thought the truth of spiritual life in God. The ship managed to arrive at a port in Northern Europe just one day late.

At another time while I was flying over the Pacific Ocean, a severe storm gave anxious moments for those aboard when it was announced that the plane no longer had radar guidance. During this time of general fear and uncertainty, the statements in Mrs. Eddy's poem "The Mother's Evening Prayer" brought me a clear sense of assurance and comfort. One verse reads (Poems, p. 4):

Love is our refuge; only with mine eye
Can I behold the snare, the pit, the fall:
His habitation high is here, and nigh,
His arm encircles me, and mine, and all.

I am deeply grateful for the loyal support of practitioners, and for class instruction, which has brought me a deeper understanding of God's presence and power. Also I have abiding gratitude for the Christian Science lectures and our periodicals, which are helping so many people.

About thirty years ago I was healed of arthritis, ovarian cysts, severe headaches, functional disorders, and the smoking habit simply by reading Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.

These healings took place after members of the medical profession had done all they could for me and said I would have to get used to the pain of arthritis and have another and final operation for the removal of cysts. I had no operation. A year previously I had been given a copy of the textbook, Science and Health, by a friend but had not done more than glance at it. She now said, "You have tried everything. Why not try Christian Science?"

I went for an interview with a practitioner, and I shall never cease to be grateful to her for the practical way in which she presented Christian Science to me. She told me to read Science and Health right through and not to be put off by what I did not understand, and to stop taking all medicines. I did not ask her for treatment, as I did not know I should. I went home and started reading, and a day or two later, as I was reading, a feeling I cannot describe went through my body. All pain ceased, functional disorders were righted, and I knew I was healed.

On my returning to the practitioner to thank her for her work, she said she had not given me any treatment since I had not asked for it. The little knowledge I had gained in our interview, and my willingness to turn to Truth, and the reading of the textbook had healed me.

I am grateful to God for the Saviour, Christ Jesus, and for Mrs. Eddy's obedience to God in giving us Christian Science. Membership in The Mother Church and a branch church have been happy experiences. I have served my branch church as Second Reader and Reading Room librarian. I am also grateful for class instruction. The Christian Science literature is a constant source of inspiration.

I am happy to verify my wife's testimony.

Christian Science has given us a practical way of dealing with life's problems, and has brought much happiness over the years.
