In the late 1920's, I developed a very annoying cough and had a definite feeling of illness. I went to see a lung specialist, and while he did not pronounce it tuberculosis, he suggested I go home and remain in bed, taking complete rest for some time.
As I was then single and living with an elderly couple, I was not sure this could be accomplished. However, the dear lady of the house willingly agreed to prepare my meals and take care of any other of my needs.
At the end of two months there seemed to be no improvement. Then one evening the gentleman of the house came into my room and asked me if I had ever heard of Christian Science. I told him I had heard of it but thought it was a system of saying, "I am well, I am well," over and over again. He told me his mother who had lived in Boston had investigated it and had become a staunch Christian Scientist, that she had sent him a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and that it was in the bookcase in the den, if I would like to read it. During the time I spent in bed I had read many of his fine books, so I willingly agreed to read it.
My mother had passed on when I was a boy of six, and I had been boarded in a number of homes during my childhood and had come to feel that no one in particular cared very much about what happened to me. As I read the book, I began to realize that living did not depend so much on how much love was expressed to me as on how much of the Christ-spirit of Love I was expressing.
Somewhere near the end of the book I suddenly realized that God loved me, and that no matter what seemed to be happening I was no longer afraid and would trust God to do with me as He chose.
That night I was awakened, and I rushed to the bathroom, where I coughed up all the matter that had made my condition so difficult. Two days later I felt so well that I got in my car and drove to the doctor's office. When I told him what had happened, he said, "God has been good to you. Most of such cases require an operation and months in a hospital for the lung to drain and heal." I went back to work in one week.
I did not realize at that time what had taken place, as I had still not met anyone who was a student of Christian Science; but I had been healed just by reading Science and Health. When I returned to work, however, a fellow employee introduced me to a young woman who was a student of Christian Science. She in turn explained to me what had taken place in my case.
Christian Science has met my every need since that time, and I have had many proofs of the healing and protecting power of this Science.
I am grateful for the example of our Master, Christ Jesus, for the unselfed love of Mrs. Eddy, for class instruction in Christian Science, and for membership in a branch church and in The Mother Church.
