Ten years ago I was hospitalized for six months for what the doctors diagnosed as subarachnoid hemorrhage (hemorrhage somewhere in the head). They decided not to operate upon me, since the operation was too delicate. Instead, I was given a prescription for sedatives, which I was to take daily for the rest of my life to relieve me of pains. I was advised not to exert myself physically. Then my medical category was reduced to lowest, "C permanent." As I was in government service, it would have affected my promotion and career. One day when I went to the specialist for my complaints, he told me that I would have to put up with the pains, meaning thereby that he could do nothing for me.

While in this desperate state, I received a copy of the textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, from one of my uncles. I started reading it with doubts clouding my mind. How could one get cured by just reading a book?

I read the book with so little interest that during the next six months I had read only half of it. One day I said, "Let me trust this book for today. I will not take any medicine today." I felt no pains that day. That was more than eight years ago, and I have not touched any medicine since then. The book made me a healthy man. My medical category was upgraded to highest, "Al," by a board of physicians, who carried out detailed tests on me.

I have undertaken the toughest exercises, including long marches lasting ten days at a stretch, over mountains up to 17,500 feet above sea level, and have suffered no ill effects. The truths given in the textbook have sustained me. During the last eight years I have experienced the truth of the statement by Mrs. Eddy, "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494). Whether the need has been physical, economic, professional, or moral, it has always been met by honest application of the truths given in this enlightening book.

I feel like a new man. Besides physical regeneration, my moral gains have been many. I no longer smoke or drink; neither do I miss these. The peace, harmony, contentment, and happiness I have experienced in the past eight years is more than I had experienced in my entire past life. Bad habits have been replaced by good, healthful habits. Lack of self-confidence has been replaced by confidence. In active combat in wartime, I have experienced the wonderful protection of God for myself and for men whom I have led as an officer, and have been given a gallantry award.

The various steps that have helped me have been daily study of the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly without a break even for a single day; continuous and repeated study of Science and Health, even if it has been but one page a day; membership in The Mother Church; reading of The Christian Science Journal, Sentinel, and The Christian Science Monitor; and class instruction from a dedicated Christian Science teacher.

I have benefited so much from Christian Science that if offered all the world's riches in its place, I would rather stick to Christian Science. Truly "my cup runneth over" (Ps. 23:5). I am indeed grateful to God, for Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, for the Discoverer of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy, and for the dedicated and loving practitioners and teachers.
