Like all students of Christian Science who have applied an understanding...

Like all students of Christian Science who have applied an understanding of this Science to problems, I have had many proofs that it is the healing truth. These proofs include solutions to problems of supply, business, human relationships, and guidance, and the healing of physical disorders.

In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 246): "Life is eternal. We should find this out, and begin the demonstration thereof." Thus demonstration of the fundamental fact that "Life is eternal" depends upon our discernment that it is; and each proof of the power of God, Life, enlarges the revelation, strengthens our conviction, and contributes to the final demonstration of Life's eternality as the absolute fact of creation.

One of these proofs for which I am most grateful took place about six years ago. There were symptoms of deteriorating eyesight. I found I was growing farsighted; there were blurred images and the like—signs, mortal mind would say, of middle years. I recognized this suggestion as part of the lie that man is material, but I was really awakened to the arrogance of this mesmeric belief by the frequent references that associates, particularly contemporaries at my place of business, made to the fact that I didn't wear glasses. "You're fortunate you don't have to wear glasses." "At your age, I should think you'd need glasses." "Don't you wear glasses yet?"

These friendly but misguided comments aroused me to vigorous and direct rejection of the whole evil suggestion. I reasoned that man's spirituality as the image and likeness of God exempts him completely and forever from false claims on or about matter, that since man is not material he is subject neither to age nor to any other condition of matter. Further, eyes are not susceptible to impairment, since they are, as defined in Science and Health (p. 586), "Spiritual discernment,—not material but mental."

About this time the privilege of reading in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, was conferred upon me, making me even more desirous of proving the true nature of sight and avoiding the use of glasses. I turned more consistently to the spiritual reality of all God's creation, holding steadfastly to the truth so clearly stated in the textbook (ibid., p. 486) : "Sight, hearing, all the spiritual senses of man, are eternal. They cannot be lost. Their reality and immortality are in Spirit and understanding, not in matter,—hence their permanence."

Soon, through this consistent prayerful work, I found my ability to read normally was regained. As my term as Reader began, I knew there would be no need for glasses, and so it proved to be.

To me, this was a "landmark" healing, for it demonstrated the effectiveness of earnest, persistent, scientific prayer, and I shall always be grateful for this clear evidence that we can successfully follow the Biblical counsel of James (4:7): "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." I also am humbly grateful to God for Mrs. Eddy, through whose inspiration, devotion, and courage the Science of the Christ was discovered and made known to a needy world.
