During World War II, while serving as a medical nurse, I suddenly became quite ill with a sense of mental depression. We sought the help of many well-known doctors and spent all we had. The last doctor I was referred to diagnosed my case as undulant fever. I was told several servicemen had returned from overseas with this same illness and there was no known cure. The doctor said, "There is nothing left for you but to try Christian Science."

I had witnessed several healings in Christian Science during my high school years, when I lived with a family in which the mother was a Christian Scientist. I had never investigated this Science. My husband had never heard of it, but granted my wish to visit a practitioner.

This practitioner sensed that my need was to know more of God and of man's true relationship to Him—of the great Physician and His goodness. She then asked me to borrow a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy from a nearby Christian Science Reading Room, to read the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly daily, and to attend the Sunday services in a branch church. This seemed a big order, but I felt that if I was to learn how this Science worked I must be obedient. I expressed some fear of not being able to sit through a one-hour service. All fear left me when the practitioner referred to a Bible verse, which reads in part (Rom. 8:31), "If God be for us, who can be against us?" I was immediately aware of God's closeness and helping hand.

I shall never forget the first Sunday, as my husband expressed the desire to attend the services with me and this was the Sunday our two daughters were enrolled in the Christian Science Sunday School.

I grasped this healing truth slowly, and at times was quite discouraged, but was always assured by the continuing prayerful help of the practitioner of the ever-presence of God and His encompassing Love. As I gained the true sense of man as the reflection of God, my healing finally came. Shortly after this I was healed of the smoking habit, and social drinking also faded from my experience.

My healing was such convincing proof of the power of God that my husband became interested in learning more of this healing truth.

Shortly thereafter we both joined The Mother Church and a branch church.

In more recent years we have had class instruction together. This, with the yearly association meeting, has brought us much joy and an enlarged understanding of the practical truth of the Christ-cure.

I am deeply grateful to the practitioner for her effective treatment and for strength and support, but I am much more grateful for the understanding of God's ever-presence, for our great Way-shower, Christ Jesus, and for Mrs. Eddy, who discovered and founded Christian Science and made this teaching so understandable.

I am happy to verify my wife's testimony. Also, I wish to express my gratitude for the good that has come into our lives through the understanding gained from the study of Christian Science. Through this enlightenment the social drinking and smoking habits were overcome for me also. These false appetites fell away as I began finding my way in the harmony of being.
