For all the blessings that have come into my life through Christian Science...
For all the blessings that have come into my life through Christian Science, I shall be ceaselessly grateful.
During several years of an illness three physicians tried to help me, but without success. An abdominal and a breast operation were to be undertaken. But as inflammation of the lungs and cardiac weakness intervened, my condition was declared hopeless. During this time I prayed earnestly, "Lord, lead me closer to Thee."
After I had been in bed four and a half months, I made the first attempt to walk. An acquaintance in the house saw me and lovingly inquired how I felt. She advised me to seek help in Christian Science, which I had never heard of. I gratefully accepted her invitation to attend the church services and obeyed this call as the voice of God. The readings from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy made a deep impression on me—above all, the words that God is Love, that He is good. This awakened my trust in a loving Father; it dispelled my fear of a stern God who punishes and censures, as I had been taught previously. I often looked up at the starry sky in the evening and said aloud in gratitude: "Lord, I did not know that You are so good!" Mrs. Eddy's answer to the question "What is God?" brought me a completely new view of God (Science and Health, p. 465): "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love."
I soon had the opportunity to prove God's nearness and help. I had another serious heart attack; consciousness seemed to be fading. Suddenly I knew within myself, "God is with you and He is your Life!" I awoke as if from a dream and felt free. This condition has never returned.
I gratefully declined to have help from a Christian Science practitioner, as I was convinced that if I became better and purer through prayerfully living the teachings, the physical trouble would yield. The following passages in Science and Health were a very great help to me: "Look away from the body into Truth and Love, the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and immortality" (p. 261) and "Consciousness constructs a better body when faith in matter has been conquered. Correct material belief by spiritual understanding, and Spirit will form you anew" (p. 425).
After several months this inner transformation brought about my complete healing. I was soon enjoying the best of health and could again fulfill my daily obligations. I experienced this healing thirty-two years ago, and it has been permanent.
Since taking up the study of Christian Science I have not used medicine. I have relied on God's help alone. I have often had the privilege of proving the power of Truth for myself and for others.
I thank God for Christ Jesus and for his faithful follower, Mrs. Eddy, who have brought us the way of salvation. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church and for the blessing of class instruction.
