Progressively Proving Our Immortality

Throughout the centuries seers and prophets have spoken of immortality, and religions have put forth many philosophies on the desirability and modes of attaining immortality. Christian Science, the promised Comforter, unfolds the practical, scientific method of progressively bringing to light, of demonstrating here or hereafter, the present immortality and perfection of man. It does this in keeping with Christ Jesus' promise, "Whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die." John 11:26;

This Science teaches that Life, Spirit, Soul, is God, the divine Principle of all creation, who is without beginning or end. It teaches that God is completely incorporeal, infinite, all-inclusive good, exempt from all evil, materiality, sin, sickness, and death. It shows that man is made in God's own image and likeness, perfect, immortal, and pure. He is free of the limitations of matter and mortality and is as incorporeal as God is.

Being immortal, the image of God, man does not undergo birth, maturity, or death. God is his only Mind or Ego. Spirit is his Life, substance, and consciousness. Man is, in reality, birthless, ageless, sinless, deathless. Though never absorbed in Deity, man is coexistent and coeternal with God and expresses God as He is. He manifests God's completeness, perfection, holiness, and immortality unchanged throughout eternal history.

Science reveals that what seems to be a physical universe and mortal man is actually an illusion, a belief of mortal mind, or existence separate from God. This material view with its delusion of sin, sickness, and death is the falsehood, not the fact, of creation. It is an inverted material sense view of spirituality and of spiritual creation, an ignorance of the spiritual facts of being. This view would have Soul, or God, divided into souls and put into material forms.

In Science and Health, the Christian Science textbook, Mrs. Eddy says, "God is divine Life, and Life is no more confined to the formswhich reflect it than substance is in its shadow." Science and Health, p. 331; A little further on she states, "If He dwelt within what He creates, God would not be reflected but absorbed, and the Science of being would be forever lost through a mortal sense, which falsely testifies to a beginning and an end."

Christian Science shows how immortality is to be demonstrated both here and hereafter. By reversing the material view of creation with all its beliefs through our understanding of the true idea of God and of man pure and perfect in His image, we arrive at the spiritual facts of creation.

Science reveals that immortality is demonstrated through genuine goodness, spirituality, and godliness independent of physically. Science destroys sin, disease, and mortality by demonstrating spiritual life, holiness, and immortality, which are man's normal condition as God's reflection. By so doing it regenerates material sense and self. It teaches us to demonstrate spirituality and the kingdom of heaven already within the reach of human thought by overcoming disease with harmony, lust with chastity, hatred with love, corruption with honesty, evil with goodness, and mortality with the understanding of life eternal.

This process, started in our present existence, is not terminated by death. Individual human consciousness does not experience reincarnation, nor are the demands, as well as the means for progression through spiritualization, lessened or stopped by the belief called death.

That there is a probationary state beyond the grave is illustrated in Jesus' resurrection and ascension. His wounds were unchanged when he showed himself to the disciples after the resurrection. He then demonstrated the existence of a progressive period beyond the grave, during which time spiritual exaltation destroys the belief of mortal mind and all its claims of materiality, until the consciousness of life, substance, and intelligence in matter is lost and man in God's image and likeness is fully understood as the real essence of manhood.

Mrs. Eddy writes: "Mortal man's repentance and absolute abandonment of sin finally dissolves all supposed material life or physical sensation, and the corporeal or mortal man disappearsforever. The encumbering mortal molecules, called man, vanish as a dream; but man born of the great Forever, lives, on, God-crowned and blest." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 205.
