Power of the Word

"He sent his word, and healed them," Ps. 107:20; declared the Psalmist. How encouraging it is to know that God's Word not only relieves but heals—completely and permanently! And, too, it is not for a favored few but for all impartially. It is for everyone who not only seeks Truth but claims, accepts, and identifies himself with, God's unfailing promises of good,

Several years ago I had a convincing experience of this healing power of God's Word. One afternoon all the symptoms of influenza manifested themselves very suddenly. I worked prayerfully for myself as Christian Science teaches us to do, and was practically free by bedtime. But when I awoke the next morning, the symptoms seemed even more aggravated. As I had several important appointments that day, I asked a member of my family to help me while I dressed and went to the office. Soon after arriving there I remembered the words from one of Mrs. Eddy's hymns, "Felt ye the power of the Word?" Poems, p. 75; I had sung this hymn all my life, but never had these seven words seemed so illumined and inspiring.

I began to challenge my own thinking. Was I feeling the power of God's Word? Not the power of the fever or the power of the aches and pains and the other miserable suggestions, but the power of His divine Word? I began to realize similar truths from the Bible: that He had sent His Word and healed them; that the Word of God is quick and powerful; and that, as Isaiah declares, God's Word will not return unto Him void. These promises flashed through my thought with such positive assurance that I was instantly healed. So fast did every symptom of the disease leave my body that in less than five minutes every vestige of influenza had disappeared and I was completely well.
